Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

FI Restricted priveleges

Some advice from the wise please.

Can a restricted FI conduct a bi-ennial instructor flight and supervise a PPL for 90 day re-currency?

If so, is the supervising FI required to be present?

JAR 1.326 doesn't seem too clear on this. As these functions can be performed by a CRI who isn't subject to similar initial restrictions, my guess is that a newby FI should also be so entitled.

IMHO, the answer is Yes.

After all, in both cases, the other pilot holds a PPL.

Therefore in the one hour flight for renewal, you are only there to onserve and provide instruction/advice as required.

In the case of the 90 day rule, the guy could fly with another PPL. Thus you are actually safer than that option.

Don't get sidetracked by the CRI info. Look at what experience is required to obtain a CRI certificate.

Note that in Ireland, there is no requirment for the supervising instructor to be present at the airfield. After all what is the point if you and your student are conducting a stalling exercise 20 miles down the road. The only requirement is the supervision of operation.

There is no requirement for supervision of a PPL holder for 90 day recency, unless it is a club/school requirement. If they are out of recency they just go and do 3 take offs and landings, either dual with an instructor if required, or solo.
