Renewing an old UK PPL

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone on here can give me a bit of guidance. I'm currently training a chap who last flew on his license 26 years ago, and has a UK PPL issued in 1982.

The aim is to get his license renewed. With EASA coming in we'd like to get it renewed and issued as an EASA PPL, which as I understand it, will come in after 1 July.

He's had a class 2 medical done, is booking a radio test and is getting close to the end of the training I've planned. We've got a PPL Examiner lined up for when he's ready for the Skills Test.

Has anyone out there done this kind of thing recently eg. UK PPL to JAR PPL ? I'm just wondering if we're going to run into any complications with the process, given that its a renewal but with a change to a different flavour of license as well.

Any advice much appreciated

To convert the UK CAA PPL licence to JAR, there is a minimum hours requirement and the need to have 'demonstrated the use of radio navigation equipment'. Thats all, so quite painless once the LST has been completed...

Because a UK ICAO PPL is only going to valid on Annex II and permit aircraft after April 2014. So if you want to rent or fly an EASA type which is the standard flying school fleet you will need a JAA/EASA PPL.

Thanks for the replies. Some good info in there.

Because they're now not issuing any EASA PPLs till September I think our route will be to get the LST done soon, then send that form in to renew his SEP and the form to upgrade his license to JAA at the same time. Then in 5 years time when that expires he should just get an EASA license.

We've done the radio nav part now (thanks for that advice) and he's also renewed his RT license, so its all coming together.
