FI(A) rating
I have an FI(A) rating on my JAA ALTP licence. Other ratings on the licence are: IR/ME(A), SEP(A) (land) and MEP(A) (land).
Can I instruct IFR on this rating or do I need an additional IRI(A) rating?
P.S. I presently work as an airline pilot and am planning to go back to flight instructing.
Cheers

I think a look at your Instructor Rating page should answer the question.
When your Instructor Rating was first issued it probably included the words "No applied instrument training" or something similar. This meant that the only instrument training you could give was that required for the PPL initial issue.
To have this restriction removed required further training and testing. As I understand it successful completion of this would then allow you to instruct for the IMC rating or IR depending on which of these ratings you held.

The IRI is if you don't hold an FI rating, but are an experienced pilot wanting to instruct instruments. as an Fi it's just the 'no applied instrument' endorsement removed. It's all in LASORS 2008 section H.

If you do not have access to LASORS the course requires a minimum of 5 hours flying training with an FIC instructor plus ground school and then a test with an FIE to remove the "no applied instrument" restriction, but if you have a JAA licence you will have to keep either a single pilot IR or an IMC rating current to be able to exercise the privileges of instrument flying on SEP/MEP aircraft. By the way it is an ATPL these days not an ALTP!!
