Instructor recruitment & retention

I've lost touch with the "going rate" for pay for full time basic instructors. My gut feeling is that it might have crept up in recent times due to instructor shortages but have no figures to prove it. Would be very grateful if you guys could give me some indication of the deal you're on, or if you've just qualified as a FI (R), what you would expect to get. PM me if you prefer. Thanks Syd.

from what i know but you will get a miriad of answers.

restricted c.£12.00 -15.00

un-restricted c. £17.00-20.00

CPL £35.00-£50.00

IR £50.00+

Generally no-retainer for the above

I think this is about average but who knows.

as FI(R) was getting 18ph, as FI 22-25 ph. solo hours also payed as normal rate.

I pay three-axis and weighshift microlight instructors 35 a flying hour - including solo hours. No retainer and they help around the airfield - grass cutting and oil changes etc, free.

I'm the exception!

Normally, 20-25 an hour tops.

Just for curiosity in my FTO (northern Italy) we are paid 33 € for VFR flying hour and 15 € for ground instruction.

Full-time instructing at the lower levels is just a slow way of going broke. At my school there are absolutely no perks and the pay is minimum wage at best. I don't know a single FI who isn't working a second job to survive. Kiss enough a**se and you might just get to teach multi or IFR after a couple of years - £30.00 per hour plus a small retainer £25-30K gross in reality).
Unless you love teaching (as I do) and can live on fresh air (as I am learning to), forget it as a career.

I am on 13 GBP in one school and 20 GBP in the other. No retainer, and you are supposed to do all kinds of little jobs like vacuum cleaning the clubhouse, empty the bins,... It is a good job to get experience, build your hours and gain confidence ... for a year or so.

There is definately a shortage of instructors. I could almost certainly assure someone now of a job in my school earning £18000 going to £20000 shortly after salary for unrestricted. Also restricted £16500. No additional money. No crap jobs like emptying bins etc. Lots of flying hours. drop me a pm if interested

i work 6 day weeks and get a salary of about 18k (FIr - hour building, and every one nows it!) If i work my day of i can either get the hole day at £6.78 an hour, or flight pay at £16/hr.

and its dam good fun!

How many (flying) hours does an FI work on adverage? I assume that it would be much more in summer months?
