Unhappy JB Close but no cigar

Wish it was just a bad night leading to a storm in a tea cup.

VP8, love to know where you work, if you do indeed do it for the money.

As JB rightly presumed, why the hell do we work in (in my case Ops) Ops/Crewing.

I work in European shorthaul, and have done since 89. I have adapted to major change within the industry. Outside the normal 9-5, I have full Commercial and Operational control of the beast. Sure (hmmmmmmm) commercial are on the end of the phone, but.

Where else, for the salary we get paid, can anyone spend the cash we DECIDE to spend, and earn what we do?

Who else has to have the the all round understanding of their company that we do?

Who else has to have the all round understanding of their equipment, from PC to Aircraft, that we do?

In a nutshell, I am Ops, Commercial, Crewing (eight hours a day and line manager outside said hours), Nav and ATC liason and trouble shooter, general catering and handling dogs body outside of 9-5.......... and all for 21K.

My question, where else could this happen?..............................

Been doing this for longer than I care to admit. I've tried "proper" jobs but have always come back. Why? Because it's what I know and, in the main, airline bods are the best bunch to work with. (Aaaaaaawwwww..)

You on a nightshift then Uncle..?

Cracker's right (the soft git!)

Thinking about it, it's always the guys and gals your working with that make it what it is....and let's face it, where else are you ever going to meet so many incredible charactures as you do in the airlines.......

Boredcounter's posting of the job description does bring it all down to earth with a "bang" though....

Cracker,
Where's my curry then..?
Back in the office on Sunday if you want to compare days off for a night in your local... and i'm not talking about that working mans club opposite.....worse that than the Turks Head in Castle Don..

I've been asking myself for six years...."Why do I do this". The ramp is always hotter than hades without the promise of a breeze, Jet A smells like kerosine and usually I take a bath in it once or twice each day, all of the equipment seems to tear up at the same time and never can get a repair until Monday, ......on call after hours 365 days each year even if the office is closed on "a holiday". The telephone never stops ringing, paperwork is piled to the ceiling and sometimes I'd like to have a weekend off. The reason I love the world of aviation from my point of view is......I've met some wonderful, genuinely kind people who come back time after time and appreciate my efforts in making their flight run smoothly. I get to stay outside all day......take breaks if I feel like it........ I suppose I love what I do because everyday is diifferent. I never see the same people or do the same job day in day out. I do different jobs on different days and that doesn't make my job monotonous. Personally I have never fit into a regular office job with 4 little walls to look at for 8 hours, nor do I have wear myself out to make production. I get to watch some spectacular aircraft landings. This is where I "fit into the world"......and I am glad I've found somewhere that I do.

IF WE DIDN'T DO THIS WE WOULD ALL HAVE TO GET PROPER JOBS!!!

PERSONALLY I LOVE THE COMMERCIAL HILARITY, THE LACK OF INFORMATION, CREWS, TRAINING AND VARIOUS ABUSE FROM CREW AND PASSENGERS. ALMOST FORGOT THE MANAGEMENT SUPPORT...

Wink Buzz and I'm not talking the Airline

So that is it then. That is what it all boils down to. It is that BUZZ we're all sure to get most days after running round like a T%t.
I got asked at interview, "Why do you do Ops". Whilst bu££ered if I know rattled round my pea-sized, for the "buzz" slipped out.

As for the smell of A1, I havn't been Airside for a long time, but since Chapter3 and beyound, I long the wiff of a turboprop, it hooked me what seems like moons ago.

If anyone can work out any other reasons we do it, help me on my voyage of discovery................................................... .....

Boredcounter.

My reason for "doing it" is not very original I'm afraid. I lived near LHR, liked looking at aeroplanes. Late sixties, the thought of cheap worldwide travel, I did a couple of RTW's which at the time was pretty unique. Not anymore, virtually everybody and his dog have now flown somewhere.

The glamour of the job, meeting interesting people especially the crews. The opportunity to sit down the back of an aircraft circuit bashing around STN or BOH...free flying !!!!

Airlines were run by airline people, now it's just like any other business, run by business people.

I now work with people who are not the slightest bit interested in looking out onto the ramp to see what is there, they could be working in a bank for all they care.

Two days are just never the same

One of the reasons why I do it ( baring the obvious $$$ to pay the green fees ) is that the job offers that element of surprise......you just never know what the operation may bring or what rules & regulations the suits are going to think of this week.

For us, no two days are the same & that's what keeps us on our toes.

Hehe - too right!

Fortunately I've got a nice piece of paper called a contract, so won't be here too long.

Have utmost respect for you guys/lasses slaving away in ops - I think all pilots should go thru it.........
