As a qualified aircraft engineer, and a very frequent flyer, I am disturbed by the overloading that is going on in the cabin, and consequently the whole aircraft, economy passengers on most airlines, are meant to be restricted to 7kg, In one carry on bag, but this is being totally disregarded by check in staff, passengers are routinely allowed several carry on bags, and large suitcases, which obviously weigh a great deal more than 7kg, I know this for a fact, as many passengers struggle to get them into the overhead bins, resulting in the overhead bins being dangerously overloaded (they do have a maximum weight limit decal on all overhead bins), and there being insufficient space for the huge amount of carry on baggage.
Passenger hand luggage is averaged at 7kg, with an estimated average weight for each passenger, this goes onto the load sheet, if the aircraft then also has some trade cargo added, as many commercial passenger airlines do, the aircraft could very easily end up being dangerously overloaded.
To compensate for the amount of extra bags that are aloud into the cabin, many airlines now instruct passengers to put their additional hand baggage under the seat in front, I am sure that many airlines are quite happy for passengers to have oversized, carry on luggage, so that they will not check any bags into the hold, so that they can sell more space in the cargo holds commercially.

Since online check in is on the rise it’s becoming harder and harder to control the increasing amount of hand luggage coming directly to the gates, airlines are all about saving money so paying for as little as possible for example some flights will have 1 gate agent on a 25 minute spin, making it almost impossible to control and limit the amount of baggage that goes on board, also the lack of scales airside is another one, they’ll clock on soon and I guess everything will be like FR, EZY and W6 soon paying to guarantee hand luggage in the cabin.

it is the flight safety aspect that bothers me, passenger aircraft carry cargo as well these days, and I don't blame them, margins are tight, but they are not taking into account the extra weight of all the extra carry on luggage that is on board, I am sure some aircraft are going to be overweight.

You can always do a survey and change the assumed weights. This was done for the average weight of passengers a few years ago - not surprisingly it had increased significantly over the previous assumptions (particularly for some nationalities). I really hope that there is a high degree of over-engíneering in the design of overhead lockers - it is needed.

Stopping the scrummage that is boarding, well thats another matter (a hobbyhorse of mine). Airline commercial practises encourage it. How many times have you flown in the US and had airlines offering to check in surplus hand baggage for free?
