Are there any IET members lurking around here? I was wondering what the benefits are of being an IET member, and if there are any benefits (financial or otherwise) in becoming registered as an EngTech.

I am in the IET as a CEng. Joined in a previous career life in manufacturing when it was the IEE.

At the time, in the company I worked for it was a big thing. Also it focused me to keep my training records in order. It was quite hard work achieving it and included undertaking a professional review culminating in an interview. Now I am working for an Airline in I think this industry doesn't tend to bother or even recognise it (certainly not on the maintenance side) and I don't even put it on my business card.

I think it is very satisfying to achieve membership and you get to meet some good contacts. Also they have a lovely building on the bank of the Thames next to Westminster Bridge that you can use for reasonably priced meals if you visit London.

It depends which company you join, everyone recognises it, looks great on the CV and you get the glossy mag to read. Something to treasure when you retire.......

You might find registration as an Engineering Technician through the Royal Aeronautical Society is more appropriate?

IET, which is the old IEE has a good and old track record in engineering, but only a partial interest in aviation. RAeS by comparison has a massive track record in aviation, a large part of which is engineering. It also tends to be much less snobbish about the difference between CEng/IEng and Eng.Tech than certainly the IMechE, although I don't know the IET so well.
