Aircraft Engineering.
Seriously considering going back into aircraft engineering.
Spent 9 years in RAF in the trade of A Tech E (Aircraft Technician Electrical), i know things have moved on a bit since i came out in 1986 but i have always had a general interest anyway so i may be out of touch practically but i have quite a lot of theory about how modern airliners work etc but i dont profess to know it all.
I have extensive electrical and electronic experience which is current, and i am qualified to HNC level in this field. I also have extensive mechanical/hydraulic and pneumatic experience. I have pretty much all the tools for the job, as well as computer literacy.
Now the bit that might put the mockers on it, i am 45 and havent worked on an aircraft for 22 years.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, are there any contacts i could use, or am i past it and wasting my time. Comments please.

Hi Howard,
I'm surprised you stayed away that long, we all know it's in your blood.As for you being too old, I,m same age and just made Engineering Manager, been at this since age of 16, it's by far the best show in town, don't tease yourself any more, apart from that there is a MASSIVE shortage of good guys right now, so you've got nothing to loose.

Jetset 41 s right ,There is a big shortage of good people right now. You will probably be able to get your foot in the door, but will you be able to survive on fitters money.There is a big difference between fitter and LAE as far as pay goes, if you can get back I suggest you do your licence as fast as you can ,for you as an electrician you can go one of two ways. B1 LAE is what used to be Engines Airframe and Electrics or you could go B2 which is Radio radar Autopilot Instruments and Elecrtical generation. I was the same trade as you in the mob and I am now a B2 + B1 (Electrical) . So go for it ,today its not unreasonable to earn £ 40K + as a LAE.Good luck Hoof!

Perseverace and tenacity are the name of the game here because there is a massive skill shortage and your skills and qualifications seem ideal. Aberdeen area cannot get enough skilled engineers and fitters to work on helicopters. CHC Scotia, Bond and Bristow all desperate for people with the atributes you already have.

Thanks to all for words of encouragement.
I`m getting the CV polished up and digging out the qualifications etc so i can get my act together.
Not overly concerned about working for fitters money as opposed to LAE money, i`m at that point in life where i need to work to live but kids off my hands and small mortgage etc so i can live on less than i currently earn, however i`m not prepared to work for peanuts.
I ve got a lead to follow up at Doncaster (ex Finningley) any more are more than welcome.
