A Question about MD11 Engines?
Hi There my Friends
I've been throughout these years a Great Admirer of that beauty called MD11.
However there is one doubt, that even some MD11 pilots i talked with, couldnt explain me, so i respectfully ask for your kind help here, if possible.
As far as i search on the net, i couldnt find this answer...Let me try explaining with all my best english.
These pics below shows the GE engines of the MD11, as an example»»»

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0985174/L/
However there are some more pics of the GE engine»»»
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1033014/L/
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1108635/L/
So, my question is as follows...as far as i search(net, books, friends, etc), all tells that the engine in all cases are the GE.CF6-80C2D1F, with no changes.
But looking closely, we can see that the first examples show us a much more prolongated and sharpened exhaustion cone...
So, is this a new version, with a new name, or both have the same tech. designation, besides the differences...?
Sorry to take your time, or my apologies if you find this question a lil bit boring..
Many Tanx...Cheers

Hello JanetFlight,
You are correct, there are two different typres of exhaust cone fitted to the -80C2D1F. The longer one is the older version has now been ammended by the shorter one, however the later variation is more prone to cracking around the hole at the rear! You can still fit either type. At my old company (FedEx) you had to have a matched pair on the No.1 & 3 (wing) engines, i.e both long or both short. It didn't matter what was on the No.2 (tail) engine. There was a note on the engine change workcard to specify this.
However, this doesn't seem to matter anymore. In my latter days at FedEx one MD-11 rolled into the gate (N601FE) with a long & short exhaust cone on each engine. On checking the maintenance manual and engine change workcard the requirement had been revised and you could fit either type to any position. Hope this helps you a little.
Cheers
