Dan Air BAC 1-11......in crates

Many years ago...poss in the 80s seem to recall that Dan Air rebuilt a BAC 1-11 that had been an insurance write off due to incident in Germany - poss flying with Bavaria. I think the aircraft arrived in the UK in crates and was rebuilt and into service. Any `older` engineers remember this one?

May be a bit of legend in this but .....
The rebuilt 1-11 was G-AZED a 414, originally D-ANDY of Bavarian. It was rebuilt at Hurn after being damaged. If I recall. This was all before the -500s joined the fleet so the others were TPL,TPJ which were both ex British Eagle ? and XCK, XCP which were both ex an American operator that is eluding me at the moment.
For better detail you need someone from Lasham, Luton, or Berlin for that is where the 1-11s operated early on.
Used to like the avionics fit on CK & CP but it's all a long time ago. so might not be totally correct.

Dan Air 1-11 rebuild

I worked with a chap at Court Line who was ex Dan Air - John Fox, who used to relate stories of being heavly involved in rebuilding a "write off" 1-11 after an incident in Germany.
From recollection - and it is 30+ years ago, the aircraft was a British Eagle
(-400 I think) .
If you are out there John, fill us in on the details.

ED rings a bell. I flew on it out of Berlin when my dad flew 1-11s with Dan. I believe it was a particularly difficult aircraft to get a good landing out of.

I was apprentice at BAC Hurn at the time - 69 to 73.
Aircraft was D-ANDY and became G-AZED. I think it was Dan-Air's first 1-11.
It arrived at Hurn inside the CL44-0 Guppy N447T late 71 or early 72. I have some photo's somewhere.
Nose landing gear was in fwd. belly hold following runway overrun. I think accident was at Genoa but I might be wrong.
The story was that new F/O closed throttles at about V1 when Capt. said Hold the Throttles. Not a very good way to start your career.
I'm not sure if this is what happened but makes a good story.

A separate source says the accident was at Gerona as opposed to Genoa. It seems to have lasted to the end with Dan-Air and then gone to Nigeria. A photo here on !!!!!!!!!!!!!! shows the nose (only) remaining just a couple of years ago in "Hampshire" - I might guess Lasham.

I have a note I flew it in the 1980s when Dan-Air operated for a short time an independent operation on Manchester to Heathrow. 1730 weekday departure from Manchester, only about a dozen or so passengers. Route didn't last long, inevitably.

The first Dan-Air One-Elevens were indeed two ex-American Airlines, who built up a fleet of some 30 in the 1960s, then almost immediately started selling them off again. If I recall correctly they were needed for an increase in fleet capacity following the end of British Eagle, with Dan-Air picking up their former charter work. They were operated initially out of Luton, not a Dan-Air base at the time. Eagle were, I suppose, the last charter operator to be based at Heathrow, and Luton was probably the best Dan-Air could do.

Last I heard about John is He eventuly retired and is living in the STN area, believe He is married to a somewhat Younger Lady of Asian descent, last job He had was working for GAMIT(at STN) as tech services engineer.
