Satellite Phones
Not sure where to post this question...
I was about to buy a portable satellite phone with a stick-on window antenna to use in helicopters.
It integrates nicely into the "Flightcell" device that connects satphone to headset and headset to coms so it is posible to talk on comms and satphone using same headset.
(Comms is automatically muted when using this device so pilot is not distracted.)
But a pilot said strickly speaking;
1/ A portable sat phone could interefer with NAV aids
2/ Sat phone connected to aircraft comms could interfer with NAV aids.
What do I need to do to comply with aviation law/s using a handheld portable satphone in a helicopter? Is temporary integration into coms using "flightcell" any different from using a portable with its own seperate headset?

Hi Mickjoebill,
I'm not going to be much help save to say that I have seen a very neat set up using an Motorola/Iridium 9505 handset plumbed into a Squirrel. The New Zealand operator I'm referring to is one of the most professional that I get the pleasure to fly with and I would assume (yes I know.., never assume) that they have looked into the technicalities of this and assessed it as being safe.
You could maybe speak to Jon Rowden at AST/SSD www.satellite-distribution.com for info. They have supplied me with my kit and have always been helpful.
Best of luck, the technology is great and has got me out of a few scrapes.

In fact I just looked at their website and they have a set up called Skyconnect in their product/handheld section.
Here's what it says...
Clear phone calls anywhere-any altitude
For the first time, Iridium aeronautical satellite communications service provides aircraft crew and passengers with reliable, worldwide communications including the Polar Regions. The aeronautical terminal equipment for the Iridium system is significantly smaller, lighter and lower priced than existing satellite communications equipment and can be installed in helicopters to fast jets.
That should do the trick.

Yes the panel mount sat kit kit is fully approved.
But I need it to be a carry on carry off so a handheld type is best, as I am a tart and change aircraft regularly.
Is there a aviaition standard for Sat phones or does it come down to pilot checking instruments before flight?
