In aviation all is counted and positioned by looking from the rear of the aircraft forward. For numbers, just imagine you are writing a sequence of numbers in the air while looking from the rear of the aircraft forward (so as already mentioned 2 is in the middle for three engines, No.1 on the LH side and No.3 on the RH side)

Alas whiskey, not all. Different engine manufactureres use the conventions forward, looking aft ( FLA ) or Aft, looking forward ( ALF ) to number components etc. So whilst it's generally true that left to right is a broadly airframe convention, it's not always the case. Pedantic and proud.

Point taken but works most of the time (as in all things in aviation, check the manual first and smile if english was not the first langauge of the originator)
