In aviation all is counted and positioned by looking from the rear of the aircraft forward. For numbers, just imagine you are writing a sequence of numbers in the air while looking from the rear of the aircraft forward (so as already mentioned 2 is in the middle for three engines, No.1 on the LH side and No.3 on the RH side)

Alas whiskey, not all. Different engine manufactureres use the conventions forward, looking aft ( FLA ) or Aft, looking forward ( ALF ) to number components etc. So whilst it's generally true that left to right is a broadly airframe convention, it's not always the case. Pedantic and proud. :)

Point taken but works most of the time (as in all things in aviation, check the manual first and smile if english was not the first langauge of the originator)
