SAE and MSG-3

Good Evening Guys,

One for you maintenance engineers. Can you please confirm or deny that SAE and MSG-3 are both seperate forms of RCM. I've done some reading around and I've tied myself in knots. The search function on here didn't throw anything so I hope it's in the right area. Any info with a link to a reliable source would be gratefully accepted. Failing that just your views will help me get my head around this. On behalf of myself and everyone at Leeds Uni sweating over up and coming exams, Happy New Year.

Hi,
It's made my head hurt just Googling your question!! I'd hazard a guess that someone involved in tech services might be capable of answering your question.
If you google MSG-3 it comes up with some package Boeing are trying to flog.
What are you studying exactly?

Thanks alot for trying but I had already used the net and I too got really confussed. I am studying an Aviation Technology and Management course and this particular module looks at Aircraft reliability and maintenance. So far I think I am right in saying that The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)have written a paper called the JA1011 which highlights the criteria for a Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) program. Alongside this list of criteria is another 'blurry' area which is the Maintenance Steering Group (MSG) which was originaly designed as a preventative maintenace structure and is now on it's 3rd edition. The MSG-3 I believe was updated for the Boeing 747. Please take this with a pinch of salt as I cannot find where to prove or deny what my idea of these three terms and how they relate each other is. I have also tried to e~mail my lecturer but thought I would ask the people in the field also. I hope this shoves the post to the top to get some responses.

Thats ok, i'm a maintenance engineer (LAE) but don't really get involved in the reliability side of things as our tech services sort through that stuff.
I have heard of the MSG in my past studies but never knew there was a 1,2 and 3!!
I also discovered your abbreviation for SAE but thought that as it wasn't aviation related I was heading down the wrong path.

I have been involved in both MSG 3(and prior to that MSG 2)at Airbus and then on RCM at BAe I found Them really very similar data derived a bit differently in that RCM is derived from information derived from a FEMCA(Fault effect method cause analysis) where as MSG 3 data is derived from reliability analysis,hope this helps and good luck with the studies.

and I fought SAE was for Society of Automotive Engineers.

Reverand Lovejoy - You might also try your uni library to see if it has a copy of "Aviation Maintenance Management" by Kinnison. There is some discussion of MSG2 & 3 in there too.
