This is one for all you skin bashers out there in Pprune land. Is there a keyless chuck available for windy drills? if so, how successful is it? and does it take standard drills?
Also, how do the management at your place stop V & A items such as air driven tools, from 'walking out of the door?'

There is a keyless chuck available, but I'm afraid it is somewhat bigger than a normal keyed chuck. Not much good for areas with limited access but then that's why we have 90's and 360's if your stores have got any left, or indeed had any in the first place. Used to be hangar rat at old place and they just used to make you sign stuff in and out of stores but there are always ways around that system!

Mike E, who is it you work for? Drop me an e-mail if you don't want to broardcast it over the net. I MAY take on a project at our place in the near future, and IF I do I will need to have a few field trips to gather info. I used to be at CSE eaons ago, and they provided nothing either. Was glad to leave. But now, where I work, the tooling is such a mess and needs sorting out, and it would be an idea to see how our colleagues in other airlines / MO's get by. Any help would be appreciated.

Bob the rocker, am I right in thinking you used to be a hangar rat at Brits? If so, when did you leave?
And could you give me some more info on the keyless chuck? Make, part no. etc. and is it Skydrol proof?

No, close though I was next door, not sure who makes it but I'm sure the bloke who had it bought it local, Cromwell's or Monks and Crain somewhere like that. Can probably find out, but giving one of those a ring is a start. It is metallic so indeed I hope its Skydrol proof, but I can't recall a time when I've used a windy in direct contact with the demon fluid

I worked as a conny at FLS Man for a short while if my memory serves me right they had quite a good selection of tooling to borrow/use, you had to book early though for some of he more popular bits. I think that when you booked something out of the tool crib you had to be in posession of your swipe/clock card also the job card was swiped that way they knew who last booked the tool out and where they where working. Also I seem to remember that the tool crib/stores area was protected by cctv.

There are some very nice quick release chucks and keyless chucks out there.
The best Q.R chuck I have used is the ones we buy from Boeing surplus. These are very small, but do use a custom drill bit. I also have a keyless adapter that fits into this chuck. I can't recall the manufacturer of this product and I don't have access to my tools at the moment. I will check it out when I get back home. Boeing also sells a very nice Q.R chuck for threaded angle drills (not the UK collet style) and you can get a miniature chuck to use regular drill bits with these as well.

As far as stopping the tools walking out the door, sign out and return on a a daily basis for shop tools. Failure to return - you buy the missing item at replacement cost, (I'm not interested in where it went, or what happened to it)!
Everyone I hire is expected to have (or acquire) their own basic metal working tools and have the ability to use them. Specialised tooling is provided by us.
