Aircraft Manufacture

Sorry for being soo stupid! I usually frequent the cabin crew section

(just to let u know I don't work in the industry just yet.. and after asking this I probably never will)

I'm currently researching aviation history and stuff as part of an assignment, but someone just said to me that Boeing make Airbus.

I always thought Airbus was totally separate!

So which is right

and I again apologise for being so blonde although there will be more blonde style questions to follow

I'm so making myself look so thick. But I am gulable and I have a habit of believing what people tell me

well I was already on the boeing website.. and I was very confused given the only jets they made were Boeing aircraft (like 717, 747.. no 320s etc) so I thought I'd ask here!

Thankyou very much!

Your friends may try confuse with McDonell-Douglas. Boeing bought them a few years back and are still required to support the aircraft. The 717 was a McDonell product changed over and somewhat revamped when Boeing bought them.
Boeing also has it's hands in many military aircraft as well. Hope this helps you out.

Actually, Boeing design and assemble Boeings, and Airbus design and assemble Airbus.

Most of the parts, even major sub-assemblies are manufactured by 10001 companies worldwide acting as skilled sub-contractors. For example, some years ago, I was working for Westlands Helicopters - and spent most o my time on a major sub-assembly for the Boeing 777 !

That said you should see the monstrous Airbus wing factory at Hawarden, or their assembly plant in Toulouse - astounding bits of Engineering in themselves.

Ghengis,

With respect to Hawarden and Toulouse, the most sensational Hangar I've seen has to be the Brabazon Hangar at Filton. The steelwork in the roof really is a work of art.

If we're talking elegance, drop into Old Sarum sometime and look at the wonderful WW1 wooden truss supports in the hangars there.

Since we seem to be into hangar spotting Base hangar at RAF Brize Norton is the largest in Europe and is trully something to behold.
From memorey they can fit something like 7 Tri-Stars in it.

I thought that the RAF only had 3 L1011s, what do they do with the rest of the space?

They have 9 Tristars:

The rest of the space is taken up with VC10s and quite possibly C-17s although I haven't been to Brize since they moved there.

More like 9 and the rest of the space is taken up with trying to keep the mighty 10 flying.

OOPS I replyed not realising the question had already been answered on Pg 2!

BTW I believe the C17s go to the USA for some maintenance/Mods.
