No customer lost, just senior management announced a $13m loss for the year, and hence that heavy maintenance at STN and MAN is no longer profitable.
They will be concentrating on the areas that are profitable, i.e. Light Maintenance ("A" Checks and Equalised Checks), Line Maintenance, Component Management, Component Repair, Tech Services and Training.
Any existing Heavy Checks will be going to Dublin, where the overheads are lower.
MAN: R.I.P.
STN : R.I.P. (Unless you are an "Office Doik", then the future is rosy!?!?)

I wonder if there is enough capacity in the contract market to absorb the jobs? (Assuming that the guys and girls laid off want to stay in the industry).
Wasn't there talk a couple of years' ago about BF Goodrich or Boeing going after FLS?

Yes, they were all alleged to be interested at one point. Also, I believe Singapore Technologies and SR Tecnics were also mentioned. SR Tecnics is apparently in the final stages of completion (if you believe what management sources say). That's assuming that there is still a company left by then to buy!!

There were rumours circulating around MANchester around xmas time that there was American interest in acquiring the FLS hangar at manchester and also that the MyTravel operation would be moving into the vacant ex BAW hangar?? As I said rumours though, unless anybody knows better!

Sorry to hear this, it hasn't changed since I was there in early 90's.
Hopefully I can give a slight glimmer of hope to a few, at Manchester in particular, check out Aviation Jobsearch there are some 6 month contracts in the offing for 4 mechs and 1 Licenced Engineer, must have 747 with RR and/or CF6 and/or JT97R4G2, full B1 JAA or HKGCAD or BCAR A+C, all line work, A340 or 777 with GE90 desireable. A little light at the end of the tunnel I hope for someone.

The sr deal for fls has now been finalised, fls will run under its own name in the short term and then be absorbed into sr gradually. I do not think there will be any presence at Manchester for fls/sr, it is my understanding the deal is for dublin and stansted only.
