S/O QF Roster
Could someone please tell me a typical roster for an S/O on long haul and what sort of pay they recieve?
Any info on S/O life with Qantas would be handy!
Thank you.

That would vary quite a bit depending on whether your a long haul 747 S/O or longish haul 767 S/O.
If its 767, then all overseas ports now are only asian with some domestic slips in most Aust capitals.
Trip length varies between 2/3 - to 13 days. Most trips are around 5-7 days. Generally slips in ports are not that long. Usually you get around 23 days off in 8 weeks. (Varies depending on what routes are left and how many S/Os there are).
A large portion of the flying is 2 sector days with only a few 1 sector routes left.
An example of a 13 day pattern is:
SYD-MEL(p). MEL-HKG. HKG-SIN-PER. PER-NRT. NRT-PER. PER-SIN-HKG. HKG-MEL(-SYDp).
A 5 day pattern:
SYD-BNE(p). BNE-CNS-HKG. HKG-CNS-BNE(-SYDp).
Hope that helps.

Keg I did indeed! They are so many wonderful people I couldnt possibly do them all justice!!!
(p.s. They would only make the list if they like black pepper prawns)
kreugers, S/Os on the 767 usually get a new crew every 2 or 3 sectors. Its very rare to complete an entire pattern with the same Cpt and F/o.

Thanks very much for that informative Reply RAT, I do appreciate it.
Two more questions mate if you dont mind!
What is the pay like for S/O?
Are you able to tell me how long it usually takes before your seniority/experience qualifies you to become an F/O?
I have a wife and 2 children and was wondering if the life of an S/O is suited for someone like me who cannot risk losing his marriage over the job he wants the most in the world!
Cheers.

I'm an SO on the 747-400.
The 8 week rosters rotate when you are at the bottom (seniority wise) i.e. you get a flying roster for 8 weeks, then a 'reserve' roster for 8 weeks. At present, -400 SOs (who are on flying rosters) are rostered for around 25 days out of the 56.
The pay while flying is around $2000 a fortnight, $1400 on reserve without flying, when you are on 1st year pay. This is in the hand and does not include allowances.
Allowances can be pretty good e.g. around $400 for 48 hours in Singapore, given to you at the hotel and is (virtually) tax free.
After you complete about 18 months of service your pay jumps significantly. A 3rd year SO who doesn't 'chase' the flying tells me that he grossed $125k last year minus allowances (about $15k).
The trips are usually 5 days (LAX), 9 days (Europe) or 12 days (Europe twice out of Asia) in length. You might get 2 'double shuttles' for a total of 24 days work for the roster period.
The first promotion to FO that an SO can currently get is on the B767. The most junior pilot to score one of these positions joined the company in Oct last year. (He'll be trained on it within the next year). So, if you don't want to stay on longhaul, the promotion is very rapid. (The only qualifications that you would need for this position, I believe, is to hold an ATPL as you do a command endorsement).
As far as how it affects your marriage, ask me in a year...

Where do I sign up.
I reckon they'd get good value out of me for the next three years until I hit 60.
I make a great cup of coffee and having raised three children succesfully, reckon I'd be a dab hand at this CRM thingy and keeping the peace in the cockpit.
Jus' travellin' around for a last little bit, before hangin em up would just about round it out nicely. Besides I'm starting to get under mrs gauntys feet.

Wind up.
Call button, that third year pay is a little on the steep side. Knock about 15-20% off that figure and add the allowances and you're a little closer. Eithier that or the person may not be chasing flying but is certainly chasing overtime back and forward to the USA!
I must be doign something incredibly wrong if in the top third of the 767 roster I can only get 20% more per pay than a first year 744 S/O! Or are things just that disparate these days!

Keg,
dont forget that new S/O's on the 400 have been getting permanent pattern lines very quickly, some have got away with no blank lines in the last few years.
Classic S/O is probably close to 15 - 20 K less than the 400 guys (and for that benefit we hold an extra licence and two extra sims a year, not to mention less time in the bunk).

Time to promotion
A very good mate of mine started with QF as an S/O on the 400, and got a promotion to F/O on the 767 after 10mths as an S/O, and 13mths in the company. He did 1 blank line only before becoming perm. pattern line.
As others have said, F/O slots on the 767 are heading very junior, because a lot of S/Os are holding off for 737 slots which, incidently, are down to less than 2yrs seniority.
As far as pay goes, the figures quoted here are pretty accurate. Those who take junior promotions to the 767 get a handy pay rise, but after about 2yrs as an S/O, you will take a pay drop, due to lack of overtime and smaller allowances (less time in slip ports/no $US allowances etc etc). That too figures greatly in the minds of a lot of people.
IMHO they become obsessed with money and forget why they learnt to fly in the first place.

Back off Keg. No wind up involved. Just passing on facts as shown to me.
Maybe I wasn't clear (after re-reading my post). $125k minus the $15k in allowances. i.e. $around $110k gross. Is that better?

Easy CB, I meant that somone was perhaps winding you up, not that you were winding us up. Those 'new' figures start to make more sense now! Ta muchly.

AB4, at last, someone realises my true potential!
I try and add to the discussion most of the time including tid bits of info that may be useful. A dozen or so posts in the last two years and the best you can come up when you choose to contribute is a stab at me for enjoying my company and my work.
PS: If you think I'm pro 'everything' QF then you have me sadly misplaced.

I wish I could believe that your apology was sincere, but a review of the tenor of your other posts suggests otherwise.
Our friend Keg has always been very constructive, gives great support for his company and is always helpful to the many aspirants thereto over some period of time.
He also puts a "positive and friendly face" on QF which is the opposite from that which some here would say they have.
I will always support members who behave so.
If you also work for QF, I would suggest that you are being counterproductive to that.
We try to be positive here and try to reserve our angst for those matters that are important or of value to us all.

It tells you something that you will wait a looong time to get an F/O slot on the 744. F/O on the 76 can be had in the blink of an eye.
If you want lifestyle and loot sit on the 744 forever. Many do. There are a stack of very experienced drivers just takin it easy and enjoyin' the view.
If you want to actually fly and work your freckle off go 76 after the 11 second delay as an S/O.
