More new (and old) birds for QF

Just been told that Aust. Wetleasing is "getting" 3 new (old) 733s. More ex-Ansett boys look to be first in line. All 3 to be used on NZ domestic roots in addition to what we've got now.

Our cousins over the pond to get 4 new 738s, although I don't think they are due until sometime next year. More jobs for more aussies. (So Sorry NZers)

Qantas to expand its 737 fleet

By Mark Todd
AAP SMH July 22 2002

Qantas will spend another $400 million on new Boeing aircraft as it upgrades and expands its fleet to cope with the extra demand that has fallen the way of the carrier in the wake of Ansett's collapse.

The Qantas board approved the purchase of four new Boeing 737-800 planes at a meeting in Tokyo last week. Qantas has also taken out options to buy a further four aircraft.

"The four additional new aircraft will take our 737-800 fleet to 19 and ensure Qantas has the capacity to meet expected growth in the Australian domestic market," Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon said.

The purchase comes with the sharemarket expecting Qantas to raise $500 million to $1 billion through an issue of new shares, both to buy new aircraft and to take a 25 per cent stake in Air New Zealand.

An outcome is expected after the New Zealand elections at the end of this month.

The New Zealand Government owns 82 per cent of the airline after keeping it aloft with an $NZ885 million ($771 million) rescue package in December. There was speculation over the weekend that Air New Zealand had sought a valuation of its worth from Cameron & Co as part of its negotiations with Qantas.

The latest plane order is part of an agreement between Qantas and Boeing struck late last year that includes options for 60 planes. The new generation 737-800s have greater range and are more fuel efficient and cost effective.

Qantas is in the early stages of a capital expenditure program worth $10 billion over the next four years not only on aircraft but also upgrades to lounges and improving services.

The airline will fit the new planes with economy and business class seating. There is the option of taking the planes as all-economy, with 180 seats.

Qantas will take delivery of the first four Boeings early next year and could add the other four under option by the beginning of 2004.

The airline will also lease three more Boeing 737-300s to increase capacity in New Zealand, taking its fleet to seven.

Bronte - from what I have been told the first of 3 extra 737-300's for Qantas NZ will commence after October this year.

Although this will create some 30 extra jobs I have been told that the operation shall be moved and controlled within NZ (ie: using the equivalent of a NZ AOC).

As a consequence of this the terms of employment will be that the jobs are firstly more along the lines of a permanent nature and that the pay will be in $NZ.
The pay will be less than the Air NZ B737 equivalent but slightly more than Freedom.
Either way a cut in pay and conditions to secure a permanent job.

Also expect some competition from the Freedom Air guys who are looking for a ready made pay increase.
