ATPL BY Correspondence?
Hi All,
Recently started on the ATPL, doing the 'easy 3' subjects by correspondence.
I'd also like to do at least 2 of the 'hard 4' by correspondence as $$ and time away are a problem. (Time to study and motivation aren't). Just wondering about fellow ppruners' experiences with studying this way, and which of these subjects you would reccommend tackling long distance.

G'day cracked pot,
I completed all seven subjects by correspondence, and I found that, out of the four "Hard" subjects, Navigation and Performance & Loading were the easiest to understand. So I would recommend these.
Both of the other subjects are achieveable by correspondence, if you put in the work required.
Most theory providers have a help line, which is handy if you get stuck. Also, there is always PPRUNE!

What I suggest is do Performance/Loading and Nav under self study and do Flight Planning and Systems in the classroom.
Out of the four hard ones FP and Systems are the hardest and you need to be fully clear on them in order to pass the conundrum questions that CASA put forward in their exams.
AFT at Maroochydore are very good with all subjects. With systems in particular they provide a large screen with a simulator program projected on to it so that you can see the systems and instruments in operation exactly how they are on the flight deck and it certainly helps you pass the exam.
It may cost a little extra but it is worth it.

I concur with my colleagues..
3 the easy peasy ones at home no problem.
Performance and Loading is relatively easy to attain by self study. For this one I would recommend Gavin Secombe. He sends a great volume with tutorials that must be completed and sent back to him and about four weeks prior to the exam an exam pack...so by the time you are hitting the real thing you understand it fully He also is excellent at providing the moral support you need and understand the pressure and syllabus very well. I lived via the 1800 help line!!.
I also agree AFT is great value. Aerodynamics &Systems as explained with the Simulator displaying all the sytems as you learn them is essential. I found Nathan Higgins classroom methods excellent! I had a couple of goes with Flight Planning via correspondence with no success. I then attended the AFT classroom for another look to see if I was misssing anything but wasnt really. The key to it is preparation and plenty of discplined practice...All the hard work was worth it in the end.

And if that dont work take a short cut go overseas and do them all inside a week.....But dont be suprised if sooncompanies dont accept an Aussie with a US ATP!

ive got a mate who just completed his auzzie atp. the smart pr!ck got 100% on planning. but he reckons that planning and systems are definatley a classroon subjects rather than home study subjects.
also just wondering if it is easy to convert a US ATP to an auzzie one?

I'm about half way through my Australian ATPL theory as we speak. I finished my NZ subjects about 8 years ago. I agree with the comments so far. I failed Systems basicly because I didn't really know what was in the exam and thought that I would just try to wing it on my current knowledge (some hopes). I found that there was A LOT on the 767 avionics setup, questions about what colour the thingy-me-jig becomes when you have such and such selected on the FD, etc, etc. I have since bought T. Thoms books on the subject, they seem to be very good.
I also stuffed up flight planning. I knew what was doing but you have to be FAST. No time to muck around.
If you are interested in some current notes on most of the subjects I'm sure we can come to some arangement. I know how expensive this stuff gets, unfortunatly it never stops!

AFT 's correspondence course very good, Nathan Higgins' help on phone also very good. If you can pass the rest correspondence then i cant see why you wont pass the other two, provided you put the work in.

I'm now planning to do everything except Flight Planning and Systems by correspondence, with a goal of finishing the lot by next March. Reckon I'm lucky that there's a resource like pprune where advice is so freely available, and no doubt I'll have plenty of silly questions in the coming months.
