Self did 2 wet seasons in 'The Straits' before heading off overseas late 1990. Started off with Torres Air. Anyone here from that period, or am I showing my age!

I think we were all still at high school wagin' physics classes
( I was anyway).

But you might have known Ron Kuch, Charles Du toit or Richard
Murray Prior (RIP Dick ) all good fellas and I think would have been in and around the straits then.

Also Vic Maile, Air Cairns, he's still wrestling big pigs up in the cape
(of the four legged snorting variety that is) How's it goin Vic?

Ha Ha sweet, those would have been the days of no gateway,
dirt road to the airport, no Uzu office and the old terminal with holes in the floor . Come to think of it isn't (wasn't) the old terminal with holes in the floor the new Uzu office .

And worst of all no Millies takeaway at the airport!!!

Thanks Kubin. Yep, no sealed road between our abode on Horn and the airport. Wet season mean't a 45+ minute drive. And here I was thinking a BN2 may eventually rattle my fillings! Nothing compared to the drive out to the airport. Is the 'Mary Ellen' still chugging between TI & HID? I recall the 'Gateway' had just opened about the time I left. Before that, it was the pub at the mine, or TI which were the hangouts for us in those days.

Does having flown with Kit Thorpe in the '70s qualify me for 'having flown the Straits'?

Does having flown with Helitrans and AVDEV also qualify me for such honorific title?

Does having put all the survey trig. markers in around the Straits and also done the laser profile plots and aerodist measurements (definitely pre-gps/navstar) in BE80s also qualify me?

-Just a thought!

Kubin RC

Is it correct to assume, from your post, that Richard M_P has passed away? If so, any details, within the bounds of decorum would be appreciated.

I managed to do the odd sortie with the gentleman.

Cheers

Unhappy

You pilots think it was great up Darnley way but let me tell you.... I had to put up with you pilots breaking my chairs (bill still outstanding).... scrubbing out tyres on my plane......popping holes in the underbelly....bouncing coconuts off my roof.....crashing my red ute into a clearly marked large white barrier outside my office and blaming someone else .......and.....lastly, giving the hardworking bagchucker a hard time and wearing out the tyres on his kabota! PS - I won't mention anything about t-shirts!

Hey all
Its good to hear from some old mates and remember the old times.

Im still up the straits and even though its ahs quitened down from the old days most of us keep the reputation alive.

By the way Paul Reid is working up in PNG for airlink on the Bandits.

Brings back memories like Dixters last night for CYA with Freeker and Nadsy providing the music, Hairy and Doogie busting the fuel tank in the dunnydoor out at the dam, late night trips to the dam and vidgen creek after the respective pub usually on the roof of the car and who could forget the legindary dam party but unfortunatly the worst/funniest memory is being tied to a pole at the wongi in a rain coat and being wipped by Heavy T.

ahh thank god for beer.

And coco, you'd know how hard it is to play a pool shot at the gateway with you and GM placing your b@&ls on the corner pockets. How do you compete with that.
Or BC or Jas taking out BC's computer on the massive floor slide through the horn Island CYA house. So much fun.
Eh pilot, you fly me to Sai bai.

Diverging Phugoid and KRC...

R M P passed away from Pancreas cancer late last year. It was only a matter of a couple of months from diagnosis until his untimely death.

His ashes are scattered in Prawn alley, off the east coast of Sweers Island at his request. Sadly we could not find a prawn boil to drop then into on the day, but when I flew past the next day, there was a huge boil right where we had dropped his ashes.

His spotters hat and a bottle of red were dropped there for him too, so he is being well looked after.

RIP

Verandah-Man, you must be the Uzu bag snatcher, Coco the clown(but I thought he was in Bamaga) or the former owner of UZU who still owes me $3500 from when Uzu went broke. The story was that Juniour Coco put the hole in the bottom of the Vans pod, at Boigu on a marker cone, but it may have been me!!!
Great times, dinners on the back verandah at Johnnos & Evas, trips up radar hill in Cocos red ute, it never sounded the same after that. I swear I hit a rock on the way to the dam!honest.
Paul Read in flying out of Tokua(Rabaul) on Bongos & Bandits. The coconuts on the roof of the UZU house, Im sure was Milos going away gift.
If anyone has Rob from Mobils address, please email me or post it.
Where is Tickets now???

okcoc - I remember that night at the wongai, I think I might have gotten a bit carried away with the whip. But for some reason you seemed to be enjoying it. You took the fall for me that night, after I joined the Saibai precision parking team that day (I still remember having to call CS to let them know where I left the plane parked that day.) Can not ask for much more of a mate.

cleatus - I can remember that rock as well and it was sort of on the way to the dam. I actually thought the ute sounded better after that.

Great times "up in the straights"
