Cathay recruitment ban
Like many others I'm considering the pros and cons of throwing an updated CV to CX. As a result I've been doing a little homework on the industrial action, including having dicussions with mates in that particular airline, as well as mates in other industries, particularly those big on union support.
The feeling amoung the CX guys I've spoken with is to stay away until the ban is over, that if you accept a position you will be alienated etc.
Interesting thing is that when speaking with pro-union mates in other industries they wonder why on earth the current CX pilots, being so "for" the 49er's, continue to work day in day out. One even went as far as saying, "it goes to show how p!ss weak they all are".
Is it unfair for them to alienate new recruits when perhaps they themselves could be doing more, are existing CX pilots afraid of management's action should they step their own action up a few notches? Do they have no confidence in their union? Are the memories of 89 still too vivid?
Don't get me wrong, I feel I'm not bashing anyone, these thoughts are amoungst a lot of us looking to move up in our careers. Just thinking about the decisions ahead...

As I understand things Duke, it is only new hires to CX that are being asked to support the 49'ers.
The vacant slots have been filled from within, which means existing S/Os have taken F/O slots. Existing F/Os have taken Command slots.
Why then people who don't yet work there, should be the ones disadvantaged, by being threatened with scabship, escapes me.

I agree - seems very hypocritical if you ask me. If there is still an industrial dispute, then THEY should be doing something about it, not putting it on any new hires. But thats CX I suppose.
CX Management sacked 52 pilots last July (?) after ongoing "work to rule" industrial action. 3 were subsequently reinstated, hence the term 49er.
To date they have not been reemployed, and as such there has been a union ban on joining Cathay.

THE SCAB
THE SCAB
After God had finished the rattlesnake, the toad, and the vampire, he had some awful substance left with which he made a scab.
A scab is a two-legged animal with a corkscrew soul, a water brain, a combination backbone of jelly and glue. Where others have hearts, he carries a tumor of rotten principles.
When a scab comes down the street, men turn their backs and angels weep in heaven, and the devil shuts the gates of hell to keep him out.
No man (or woman) has a right to scab so long as there is a pool of water to drown his carcass in, or a rope long enough to hang his body with.
Judas was a gentleman compared with a scab. For betraying his master, he had character enough to hang himself. A scab has not.
Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage. Judas sold his Savior for thirty pieces of silver. Benedict Arnold sold his country for a promise of a
commision in the British army. The scab sells his birthright, country, his wife, his children and his fellowmen for an unfulfilled promise from his employer.
Esau was a traitor to himself; Judas was a traitor to his God; Benedict Arnold was a traitor to his country; a scab is a traitor to his God, his country, his family and his class.
