BIK and CJ -

Isn't there a difference between the Skilled Occupations List and the Preferred Occupations List ? (which admittedly may not exist anymore).

I received an Aus residents permit several years back on the strength of an overseas ATPL (amongst other attributes!) and whilst the pilot licence was on the SOL - the POL existed (in as much as there was space made for it), but had zero occupations listed at the time. So in effect - the govt. in a weird sort of way was acknowledging overseas qualifications by granting points for them but not actually stating there is necessarily a requirement for them.

Granted it does open the door for 'foreigners' to enter the country and the workforce but if you spent some time on the airwaves of Europe, you'd think you were back home anyway. It's a global market, albeit a little harder to get into at present, but in truth there are Aussies everywhere furthering their own ends and still opportunities if you have the right qualifications and experience.

Good on 'em I say!

ATPL vs CPL holder ...

... and in addition to a 150 hour CPL being 'as welcome' as a 15000 ATPL, when I applied there were also additional points awarded for more than 3 years work experience related to your 'nominated qualification'.

I suspect that's still the case and if so, it means in an indirect sort of way, that the ATPL holder will stand a higher chance of heading 'down under' by virtue of the fact he'll be awarded more points than the CPL applicant due to his related employment experience.

So perhaps CJ need not be quaking in his boots at the prospect of a foreigner deluge robbing him of his employment prospects. In fact, I'd be more concerned should all the Aussies here in Europe and elsewhere decide to head home en masse. Then they'd definitely be a problem!

I've found all this patriotic bollox normally ends when the prospect of a decent job opens up overseas for the said encumbent. They then pack their suitcases very quietly.

Yours
