Sydney airport voted third best in the world
Sydney airport has been voted the third best in the world by a new international survey.
The survey of 1.4 million passengers, taken by UK aviation researchers Skytrax at the end of last year, placed Sydney airport behind Hong Kong and Singapore.
Sydney Airports Corporation spokesman Peter Gibbs said the result was outstanding considering that Sydney deals with less passengers than many other international airports.
Sydney was the top out of airports with 15-25 million passengers a year.
"We're a very efficient airport in that we have very good ground transport structure," Mr Gibbs said.
"It's very people-friendly."
The survey included a mixture of both business and leisure travellers.

If Sydney intl was voted the third best in the world maybe the requirements for this esteemed position are:
1: No visual approaches to foreign carriers
2: 5 min separation for traffic ariving
3: A rediculous curfew at a city's airport that hosted the olympic games
4: No reverse thrust north of twy K, if i remember rightly after hrs
5: reducing the airspace to an MBZ a few years ago when 2 of the controllers called in sick for the latenight shift
6: a one way strip for landing after hrs when the predominant breeze of 15kts+ is a southerly
7: some of the most sh#ttiest parking guidance markers for international 2 deck acft in the world
8:and now a real doozy you now have to declare EVERYTHING upon entry to customs including your personal watch, your RM Williams boots coz they cost too much for normal shoes, your laptop even if it runs on commodore 64 memory, your camera digital or otherwise, your palm pilot if you are unlucky enough to have one, oh and probably your mont blanc biro coz it is a stupid price too.
All these things in customs eyes could be hocked off to unwilling aussies by yourself the untrusted airline pilot that didnt take a bomb on board and fly straight into the AMP tower in the cbd.
One last point, the woman in question who believed all of these items to be contraban was also struggling with english as she was from somesouth east asian/indian country. I thought Johnnie howard wanst going to let these people into our beautiful country unless they could command the english language well enough to say good morning how was your flight or welcome home, but then who's home is it these days anyway.

If LAX made it to number four on the list, can you imagine how BAD the other airports in the US must be!?
Reading the fine print, the survey is one aimed at passengers only - so all your points 18 wheeler probably weren't considered (though all valid!). I guess it then raises the question: in ranking anything, who are the most important people to consider - customers/staff/competitors/professionals or heaven forbid, shareholders!

Any airport where you've got to take a bus to connect from International to Domestic cannot be a serious contender in a "Top Airports" poll. Either those who voted don't make domestic connections or they were totally intoxicated when asked to choose.

Well from the PAX perspective, both Melbourne and Sydney suffer badly from one aspect. The absolute GREED of the car parking operators!!!!
From that perspective both fail.
Melbourne also fails miserably when you want to pick up a PAX at arrivals. There is no provision for 5 or 10 minute parking where you sit in the car and wait for the PAX to walk out of the terminal. Sh!t even busy airports like LAX & O'Hare provide that!!

Reference the comment regarding "having to catch a bus between international and domestic terminals" at alot of international airports ex Aus (read large airports) you have to catch busses from the aircraft to the terminal!!!
Sydney is an airport located a stones throw from the CBD with little/no room to grow. I tend to think that with the space alocated that they have done a pretty good job.
When/if a new airport is built it will be a more complicated journey from Sydney 3-4 million people to the airport that a simple bus ride around the perimeter.
Reality is, when you arrive in Sydney as a passenger it is not too hard to negotiate your way around and the facilities are not bad.

There are hundreds of airports worldwide that require you to take a bus from one terminal to another, but my point is that these should not be contenders for any top slot in a "Best Airports" slot.
In this day and age, shuttle trains or travelators are the benchmark for moving between terminals. Given the distance between International and Domestic in Sydney, this is an issue that should have been addressed long ago.

Many thanks BIK for correcting Wirraway's report. Sydney Airport is certainly the best Third World in the world. Few airports can rival Sydney. The only time I enjoyed being in Sydney was when I changed to DEP freq!
And Wirraway, please be careful when preparing future reports. You caused me to suffer one of my Senior's Moments, upsetting Mrs Atrick. Be assured that is NOT recommended procedure.
