John Howard does it again to the industry
Watching the tv betwen beers I see JH is going to get rid of laws about being able to have a go at your boss for wrongful dismisal. So for any one in the aviation industry who gets shafted because a junior pilot will work for less is even in worse trouble now. What are your thoughts guys.

I think you should check your facts......
Unfair dismissal, if and when unfair is totally wrong. It is and will always be legislated against as part of employment law. As the current law stands it is very difficult to sack an unprofessional worker in any industry, especially small business.
In my previous life I was threatened with action from a union rep for sacking an employee after me catching her stealing. Where is the hard proof of the theft? Where were the 3 warning letters? Did I offer councelling and retraining (at MY expense!)? It came down to my word against hers. Now that is unfair and just an example of this present law gone too far.

aerocom. I think you missed the point.
The proposal is to exempt small business from the more draconian aspects of the current legislation, not totally exempt all business from the legislation. Not before time, either!

Aerocom:
Try this out: Couple of years ago @ a place I worked at, the front office girl treated the full-time position as part-time.
End result was the sack which turned into a legal fight that cost the company many $$$. Her bill was paid by the taxpayer. She still lost by the way.
Aerocom; if you do the right thing - the law is still on your side. Only the slack workers have something to worry about.

Thanks all for clearing that up. I only saw a bit of the news item.
When i heard it I thought here go all our jobs for cheaper workers and not being able to do anything about it.

P.Hendo - I don't know who gave you your legal advive but you could have gone to the police and pressed charges if an employee stole from you.
The fact is that most employers are so poor at running their businesses that they often resort to a cop out if things get tough... sackings. The reason why unfairdismissal law exist is the poor behaivour of employers over the years.

Don't know much about unfair dismissal laws but how about unfair retrenchment laws? Big company swallows up a small company. Small company works efficiently and saves big company lots of money. Big company decides it doesn't want small company any more. Offer those who've been there longest jobs at the bottom (with loss of income resulting), and the rest get retrenched. Big company has lots of other companies who are recruiting, in fact big company is constantly recruiting itself. Any room for the hapless employees of small company? Definitely not. Get out of here, sell your houses, sell your cars, hope your marriages last. Get a new life.
