P.Hendo - I don't know who gave you your legal advive but you could have gone to the police and pressed charges if an employee stole from you.
The fact is that most employers are so poor at running their businesses that they often resort to a cop out if things get tough... sackings. The reason why unfairdismissal law exist is the poor behaivour of employers over the years.
