Thumbs up PNG : Alky Malky is coming to CAA!

Well folks, it's official. That legend of the temple, that artist of the airways, that most lyrical of waxers (?), Alky Malky will join CAA as an FOI just as soon as the contract is drawn up.

Last week it was The Austrian Ace who, BTW, is settling in very nicely now. This week we confirm the return, in due course, of AM! Who will be next you ask? Watch this space ... or another just like it...

Things are finally starting to look better for poor, dilapidated CAA. Maybe we're in for a happy new year after all. Nah, that'd be toooo much to hope for...

Well, well, I suppose he'll be the new PX FOI?

Or is their some-one far less qualified, but more 'senior' in the role already? Henry perhaps?

And no 2daddies you were spot on, how do you think some of the Bros got their ATPLs? And virtually all the local AMEs got L in front of it!

Chuck.

Well, for anyone who's interested, we have Wilson in Mark's old job, which is classified under the CAA structure as Asst. Director (Flying Operations), Rowdy Regan as FOI-PT, the Austrian Ace as Senior FOI (GA).

Alky will certainly back-stop for Rowdy with Pixie, but he'll also have GA responsibilities. We have another bloke coming to us, ex Ansett and lately with Airlink, who will backstop Rowdy with APNG (Alky can't handle them coz he worked for them at one time) and he, too, will have GA responsibilities.

There's one other well known name coming into CAA, who will have purely GA responsibilities.

[Editted coz I forgot to mention that the bloke currently acting in Wilson's old job as Manager of Flight Crew Licensing is an Airworthiness Inspector whose first name is Rick.]

Hey Walter. The next thing is you'll be telling us that Bob is coming up and Ian coming down!

Oh. and by the way the great MMD did have a USofA rotary wing CPL!

OzExpat,
Is this Wilson fella a licenced pilot?
And hear Henry's been onto the ramp checks, huh?

fly_boy ... not that it matters one iota, but yes, Wilson holds a CPL, instrument rating and B200 endorsement. What are you trying to imply?

You can also feel free to disregard the cr@p about Henry too. I ignored the comments about him in my previous post because they were too ridiculous for words.

OzExpat,
The reference to Henry was a joke. I'm fairly surprised that I'd have to point that out.

Of course it was cr@p.

P.S - I think fly_boy was more curious than accusatory. We're not all out to besmirch those we haven't met.

Tenku tru,
Had the misconception that Wilson wasn't a pilot. So with a CPL only, a FOI slot may be available or what other qualifications are required for the FOIs.
I'm curious!

2daddies... I could see it starting to get out of control and didn't want that to happen. Danny has had several occasions where a joke went wrong and he ended up on the receiving end of a lawyer's very terse letter. For better or worse, that is the situation and the only thing we can do to help is to try to prevent any more such correspondence reaching Danny at the end of a long trip away, when he hasn't even had a chance to get stuck into the best of "spirits"...

But I particularly didn't want to see anything erupting on a thread for one of nature's finest gentlemen. So now you might understand why I didn't quite catch the intended joke. Indeed, I had several quite serious enquiries about that matter straight after your post was answered by Chuck.

fly_boy... the reason why I said that it made not one iota of difference is that the position Wilson now holds doesn't need to be classified as a flying position. I'm not going into the "where's or why for's" of that, but it has been the case for the last 17 years, to my direct knowledge. So lets not have any further misconceptions about the position, okay?

Anyway, including the legendary MMD, we look like having at least 4 new FOIs in the near future. This will bring our FOI strength up to a total of 7, which is more than we've had since early 1985. All of them are very experienced pilots and all have in-country experience. I don't know if there are any other slots available now, but I can tell you we don't have enough desks in Flying Ops for all 7 of them!

Ozexpat
Thanks for your help

BTW, why do you need 7 desks for 7 FOI's? , from what I can gather from Chuckles and others posts on their flying exploits/shenanigans "in country" you're gunna have your work cut out just roping and branding em

Have a good one with your new team

All right I'll leave well alone!

Woomera a quote for you from a senior FOI in POM in 1987.

Me " Hey if you ever want to come to Chimbu and fly with us, see how we operate we can always find a hot steak and a cold beer afterwards"

FOI "Chuck I'm much too old and much too wise to do anything as stupid as fly around Chimbu Province in a C185 or Islander"

Bernie Flannagan was the only FOI I ever personally saw further from a long flat bitumen runway than downwind while below MSA. He was like a kid in a candy shop when I took him to view a crash site high up in the highlands in a C185.

WB and MMD are both extremely nice blokes with long and illustrious careers behind them, I wish them all the best upon their return to the land of the unexpected!

I have no problems with admitting to a frisson of envy and admiration for those who have/do, at not having the "opportunity", or should that be "courage" to have flown in that country or known the "characters".

IMHO you/they are privileged in that regard. In the meantime the rest of us will just have to get on with dealing with the traffic jams etc etc.

Less 'Courage' than youthfull exuberance and 'bulletproofness'. It was addictive though!

Ozexpat and Woomera,
I do take your point and withdraw the comment, additionally apologising for any offence caused. None was intended.

I have had MANY dealings with DCA/CAA staff over the years and totally agree with your sentiments. They are, on the whole a very good bunch of people.

But forgive me, Oz, if I begin to think that your vigorous response was not so much motivated by concern for Danny's spare time as it was by a desire to avoid even making light (as I was) of a fairly well known but little publicised aspect of aviation (and life in general)in PNG. I have enormous respect for your experience and your opinions on the matter, but then I do also for Chimbu Chuckles and he joined in on the joke!

Next time you have a problem with something I have said (although I rarely make contentious posts - it's not worth the effort) please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] and maybe we can sort the problem out without using the "Mad" Graemlin.

Woomera... you're right coz there's never been an FOI who could rope and brand the like of Chuck! And he's right, too ... a bit of insanity helps here!

Chuck... if any of us hung around you for any length of time while you were here, we'd have ended up with a similarly attractive score of "frog marches"!

2daddies... you are, of course, entitled to draw your own conclusions, but please allow me the same privilege. When a comment is made on a thread, in an open forum such as this one, it's "out there" for everyone to perceive in his, or her, own way. And, having used my own perception of your post, rightly or wrongly, I couldn't let it stand there, unanswered, while taking tme to discuss it privately with you.

Like many others here, I've seen D+G closed by Danny because things got out of hand on a thread. I felt that this one was going that way but, of course, you're still free to draw your own conclusions on my motivation, just as others will, by now, have already done.

2Daddies you and I,and MANY others know what has gone on in POM.

Suffice to say that my rage has been tempered with time, 2 1/2 years since I escaped to the world.

When my rage was still fresh I used to post under another name and put it all out there, to no effect. Nobody cares and anybody in a position to have any effect is scared for their job,or is part of the problem. At least one individual has taken steps to insure he meets with no 'accidents'.

So now I post openly with my email available for all, if I feel the need to have a dig at the guilty/ignorant they can email me, not Danny!

I choose now to accentuate the positives of my 13 years in PNG, and there were MANY. However for those who I've attacked in this forum so vociferously in the past, I have not forgotten anything!

Chuckles

PS WTF is a "FROG MARCH"

Cool

Chuck, you mentioned the legendary Bernie Flannagan. Surely he's not still in PNG? I'd like to make contact with him for old time sake.

Bernie was another PNG legend. The notorious Flanagan's Fish Shop at Mendi - a one inch square piece of deep fried lamb flap for 10 cents - Yuck! The Clive Steele Club! Ron Neville's motel.

Ahhh, I have some great memories of Mendi.

Chimbu,
Thanks mate. Well said indeed. I experience no rage when thinking about my time in PNG (it got me where I am today), just fond memories and the continued development of a healthy cynicism fostered by the day-to-day running of the place.

It's unfortunate that in this day and age a well-intentioned joke can create such dissention amongst the ranks but I understand that's just how things are.

Ozexpat, I take your point and hope the matter is now at rest.

Chuck... seem to recall you getting frog marched at gun-point at Rabaul, at Port Moresby too I think ... and wasn't there a similar incident at Lae?

Torres... Bernie had a shop at Mendi? I didn't know THAT! Must ask him about it! He's with Air Safety Investigation which, these days, comes under Dept of Transport, but I still see him every once in a while. Will have to check for a phone number for him - don't think he has an e-mail address.

2daddies... rage and cynicism is not restricted to those who have left here. In the words of a one-time famous Hollywood actor, it's a case of ... "kiss the girls, say the lines and collect the pay cheque". ONly, of course, there aren't too many girls around here that are safe to kiss... So a fair bit of rage and cynicism continues to breed here. Issue is forgotten ... perhaps we can have an ale together some time and compare "rages"!

Oz,
If we have enough ales perhaps they'll start LOOKING safer to kiss. They always used to -so I'm told!

Sounds like a plan to me.
