Mir3,

I assure you everything I said was true.

I don't know what you are smoking, or drinking? But who the hell is Prince Maurice de Grande Bai????

Also you mentioned my mate Kaptin M before? As far as I know I have only met Kaptin M once in my life, a few months ago when he bought some memorabilia from me, he seemed like a nice enough person to me, however that is the only time I have ever met or spoken to him, except a few emails since then????

I think you must have me confused with someone else? I am not an 89er if that is you problem, I am not even a pilot??????

However I was with Compass and Southern Cross and have a very good knowledge of what happened.......

Best regards,

"lame"

Strikes me that many gov contracts went to QF
before they floated to up the revenue to the Gov,is this not a form of assistance.
No a/c debt, all payed for with no repayment for all the costs of the past, is this not a form of assistance.
The gov minister, Anderson plugging the QF line surely a diservice to AN/ANZ.
Many State governments giving money to Virgin
and Impulse to start.
There are many presidents set to giving assistance it an injustice to stop now.

A few people here are of the opinion that Ansett has become such a part of Australia that if it were to close, the country would be ruined. I'm sure it would be an national and emotional trauma, but I think these guy's are short of memory and long on (understandable) emotion.

In 1989 (I know, but bear with me, I was only involved on the fringes at the time), All the airlines of Australia shut down for an extended period of time.

Let's look at today. Ansett has a minority market share and they have already had significant shut downs over busy periods this year. There is a new and vibrant airline waiting in the wings, and a government in power that will probably use professional airlines (SQ, Cathay...) to bridge the gap until Virgin, Qantas and maybe ANZ get up to speed. It won't take long and the 22 years of descent will finally end.

Sad? Sure, but the country will survive and the government's money can go into healthcare, education and police. The stuff it's meant for.

Who knows, in five years time we might have a dynamic and proactive airline industry, as good as anywhere else in the world.

To those of you in Ansett- If this does happen, my only solice is to say that the majority of you would be absorbed by the remaining carriers. Those of you who aren't would have probably been right sized anyway.

Good luck to you all. Remember nationalism is generally a poor employer.

Jesus Chuck....Inever knew you were so darned smart! You old sandbagger you.

I think I have to agree in part with Balthazar. Many of the opinions I am hearing are very much driven by the emotion of perhaps seeing a national icon slip away. In the sense that Ansett has been foreign owned for some time now is could be argued that it slipped away a long time ago but as long as the brand graces our skies we seem to have kept a warm spot in our hearts for her. It would seem the tragedy for many people lies in the possible disappearance of the NAME from our skies. But it is a tough business this aviation stuff and many larger icons than Ansett have gone by the way, she wouldn't be in poor company thats for sure. In a free market this sort of thing will happen, we just aren't used to seeing it here on our shores. Spare a thought for the Pan Am's, Easterns, Braniffs and TWA's of this industry not to mention the host of smaller but no less loved airlines that have gone with them.

Job losses? Well we all seem to agree that at best as many as 3000-5000 people at AN will have to be pared from the payroll if they are to become leaner and survive. Looking at QF and VB, both of whom are growing at measurable rates, I would say that those that wanted to stay in the industry would probably end up with one of these two eventually, especially as the two of them would no doubt move in to take a significant share of whats on offer. There would probably be a good deal of those 3000-5000 that would take the golden hand shake and go do something else anyway. As for the 10000 or so other jobs that everyone is fretting about, well I look at it like this ( and I've seen it all before). The Aviation game closely resembles a pool of quicksand. Everything looks okay most of the time as most airlines around the world fight an on going battle to keep there noses in the air. However when one of our beloved finally succumbs, either from poor management or a shove from the competition, the void that is usually left initially will fill with more muck and the equilibrium will once again be restored. Theres a hell of a lot of ex someone or anothers working all through the airline industry in the US and Europe. 40% of the domestic market will not just be left unattended if AN takes a dirt nap over the fall out of years of mismanagement. Someone be it QF,VB,SQ vicariously through it's investments or someone else will come along and fill the void, hire plenty of ex AN employees in the process and return the air services to where they are now. Hell it may even be a better industry for it.

I am in no way sitting here salivating with my sickle in hand but having seen this situation before, and feeling sick about the possibility of losing an Aussie icon ( I can't believe they ever sold Vegemite to Kraft ) it would be wise to at least come to grips with death and call in the Chaplain just in case none of the very good suggestions across these threads bears any fruit.

ABC net 10.22 aest:

Ansett bailout deal could be close after talks

There is increased optimism from the New Zealand Government tonight that a rescue package for the beleaguered Ansett Airlines is close to being finalised.

The latest assessment comes from the New Zealand Finance Minister, Michael Cullen, who was speaking after talks with the Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello, in the Chinese city of Suzhou where they have been attending an APEC meeting.

Doctor Cullen says a deal will be worked out in the next few days, before Ansett's parent company, Air New Zealand announces its end of year results on Thursday.

The minister confirmed the deal would not involve any request for Australian Government financing to be involved.

Earlier, Mr Costello confirmed the Government would not be involved in any bailout for Ansett.

"Air New Zealand is a private New Zealand company which has Ansett as its subsidiary," he said.

"Air New Zealand is not owned by the Australian Government nor is Ansett.

"The Australian Government does not own any airlines."

Chimbu continues to make a lot of sense. I don’t believe anyone (not employed by AN at least) is suggesting the government bail out AN and leave it as is and still owned by its current (mis)managers. But it would make enormous sense for the government to set up a new National Airways Corporation and buy the carcass from ANZ at a fire sale price – ( anything but let SIA get it after they have oh so cleverly orchestrated this current crisis). It would have to be cheaper – and far less disruptive to people who want to get from A to B to use the in-place AN infrastructure (or a pared down part of it) than to set up something from scratch. If they let AN go to the wall, I believe the knock-on effects will be felt by far many more people than anyone understands yet.

A lot of people are going to get hurt whichever way it goes. Chumbu’s suggestion would involve the minimum of pain for the fewest number of people, both inside and outside AN – and Australia would have recovered a vital national asset from foreign ownership.

If that means giving the heroes a soft landing and maintain their heroic lifestyle, so be it.

Todays Sun-Herald:

Ansett nosedive: Survival hinges on NZ rescue plan

By Fia Cumming, Political Correspondent

The Howard Government may provide a financial guarantee to allow Ansett to raise cash from investors as its contribution to keeping the airline alive.

But the Government has again ruled out a direct bailout of the once mighty airline, including buying shares in it.

Treasurer Peter Costello, in China for the APEC finance ministers meeting, held talks on the issue with New Zealand Finance Minister Mike Cullen late yesterday.

But Mr Costello repeated the Government's view that the airline's crisis was a business matter that had to be sorted out by its parent company.

He said the Government would make no decisions until the Air New Zealand board had announced a proposed refinancing plan tomorrow.

"Ansett is a subsidiary of Air New Zealand and it's a matter that the Air New Zealand board is discussing, I wouldn't want to pre-empt any decision they might announce," Mr Costello said.

A spokesman for Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson said Mr Anderson fully agreed that the Government should not be involved in bailing out the airline with taxpayers' money.

But the spokesman said the Government might be prepared to take part in a joint underwriting of a cash-raising issue with the New Zealand Government.

"That would be the only thing that we would look like doing," he said. "You don't put money into these things, you guarantee a capital issue."

But the spokesman said the New Zealand Government had not yet come up with any submission to Australia and would not do so until after the Air New Zealand board meeting.

The issue has thrown a cloud over Prime Minister John Howard's trip to the United States, after two weeks of rising political fortunes for the Coalition. As well as the resolution of the Tampa crisis, the Government has been buoyed by another official interest rate cut.

But with Labor still ahead in the polls, the Government can ill afford the collapse of Ansett and the loss of 16,000 jobs so close to an election.

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark yesterday placed her faith in the board of Air New Zealand to come up with a solution, and also baulked at a government injection of funds for the airline.

"I'm optimistic there will be a way through," Ms Clark said. "The [Air New Zealand] board is developing a plan. It looks brighter than it did 24 hours ago."

Ms Clark would not elaborate on what the plan might entail, although it is likely to require changes in government airline policy on one or both sides of the Tasman.

Air New Zealand is seeking an equity injection to help fund a fleet replacement program for Ansett Australia. Ansett, saddled with an outmoded and aged fleet of planes, is losing $1.3 million a day in its battle to compete with Qantas and Virgin Blue.

Labor's transport spokesman Martin Ferguson said the New Zealand Government was largely to blame for the crisis because it had delayed a decision on whether Singapore Airlines could raise its stake in Air New Zealand.

Singapore made the offer last July but the Clark Government dithered over changing its foreign ownership laws to allow it.

"They are largely to blame," Mr Ferguson said. "When it came to the Australian Government having to front up on Air New Zealand buying Ansett, no-one objected on the basis of foreign ownership, certainly not the Labor Party."

Mr Ferguson said that after delaying the bid until it was too late, the Clark Government was now claiming the current crisis was a private sector matter.

From todays"Sun-Courier-Mail":

Ansett crisis deepens

09sep01
THE embattled Ansett Australia last night cancelled nationwide advertising for package holidays as executives from its parent company went into a crisis meeting in New Zealand.

Newspaper advertisements, including one to run in The Sunday Mail, were cancelled without explanation late yesterday afternoon.
Some signs advertising Ansett package holidays were also removed around the country. It is understood the discounts on the packages were no longer considered sustainable. The move led to further speculation about the future of the airline, under pressure from growing financial problems with parent company Air New Zealand.

Ansett's national spokeswoman Heather Jefferies said she had no knowledge of the move to cancel ads.

As New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark hinted an Ansett rescue plan could be in place early this week, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said Australia needed at least three major domestic airlines to keep ticket prices low.

He said everything possible had to be done to save Ansett, which is running at a loss of $1.3 million a day with the share prices of its parent company Air New Zealand in freefall. Air New Zealand is seeking an equity injection to help fund a $5 billion fleet replacement program for Ansett.

Ms Clark said she was "optimistic there will be a way through".

"It looks brighter than it did 24 hours ago," she said.

Back Seat Driver! Perhaps if you read your Jeps you'd have an idea what my name meant. It has nothing to do with space travel! You and LAME are just a couple of lightweights living in fantasy land. Grow up and get informed. It'll help give you some credability when you post. Good luck.

If any further evidence is required of the incompetence of AN flight ops management, get this - they are still interviewing pilot applicants this weekend!. Let Pigskin enjoy his last weekend of power. Not sure if you get paid for assisting the recievers!

ABC NET Sun:

Singapore refuses to buy into Ansett debate

Singapore has refused to buy into the debate over the future of the fledgling Ansett Airlines despite its national carrier having a quarter share of Ansett parent company Air New Zealand.

Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, says his Government has every confidence that its investment in Singapore Airlines is being protected.

On Channel Nine, Mr Lee has refused to say whether the Australian Government should fund any rescue package for Ansett.

"No it doesn't concern us, I mean that is the decision for the Australian Government to decide," he said.

"This is SIA's matter, it's a commercial matter which SIA has to work out, Government should really get involved.

"If we did, we might get criticised for showing our hand and for intervening in what must be commercial matters."

Wirraway,

Just watched that Business Sunday, surprised there wasn't more depth in the stories though, was only really about the views of Singapore and Virgin, nothing really from Ansett or Air NZ.

Best regards,

Unhappy

Can someone tell me when a company is considered large enough that the Gov't must take action to keep said company afloat?!?!?!?
I think it would be setting a dangerous precedant for this Gov't to be the white knight for Ansett.

With a tear in my eye, RIP Ansett.

Lame, keep up the good work and posts my friend, hope to hear from you soon.

ABC net 10.42am:

Regional Aust can't afford to lose Ansett: Quinlan

The Australian Capital Territory Labor Opposition is calling for a bipartisan stand in support of Ansett Airlines.

Deputy Opposition leader Ted Quinlan says the ACT and regional Australia cannot afford to lose the service or the thousands of jobs which the ailing airline supports.

He says pressure should be maintained on the Federal Government to consider a rescue package.

"This is a national problem," he said.

"I think that I'd like to see our local Government engaging with the Commonwealth as often and as vigorously as they can in order to communicate what it will mean particularly to an inland city like Canberra."

Sprucegoose,
I find your quote below quite intriguing:

<<<There would probably be a good deal of those 3000-5000 that would take the golden hand shake and go do something else anyway.>>>

When Sir Reg Ansett ran the company every employee received a copy of the financial statement for the year. There was always shown an amount to cover accrued annual and long service leave entitlements. This amount was funded and was not employed in the busines but held by the company treasury in a secure manner.

Bearing in mind the recent cases where failed companies have defaulted on workers entitlements it seems likely that this is no longer the case and that these would not be able to be paid.

Redundancy payments on the other hand are more of a company discretionary matter and likewise, even moreso, not likely to be available.

Exclamation

How about introducing a little more perspective into this debate by way of the following FACTS.

Ansett WAS an Australian company - it is NOW foreign owned.
IF the Australian government were to pour funds into a rescue attempt for AN, on the grounds that it will save 10-15,000 jobs, what`s to stop ANY foreign company setting up shop in OZ, employing several thousand Australians, and then bleeding off all income (as Rupe and Fat Pete did) before declaring that the S#%! is about to hit the fan?
Similarly, QANTAS was flogged off to British Airways as a competitor in Australia`s domestic aviation industry. For the Australian government to now turn around and financially RESCUE Ansett, must be seen as extremely misrepresentative and not acting in good faith at the time of sale.

Likewise, for the government to even consider bailing Ansett out MUST be seen as a threat to the employees of QANTAS and Virgin Blue!.

Ansett - just like Compass 1 and 2 - is out of the game - finished!

The result WILL be a stronger QANTAS and Virgin Blue, and the possibility of other new entrants.
