Lightbulb Ex-Ansett employees - time to take stock.

I don't want to start off with the old '89 ra ra, however that year was a year for major decisions in our lives, as this year is for YOU, now!

Many of us (pilots) suddenly realised how UNQUALIFIED we were to do anything other than fly aeroplanes, however being our chosen profession the majority of us decided that there were opportunities to continue/re-start our careers overseas, as we were ACTIVELY prevented from gaining employment back in Australia (that Hawk also tried to stop us working os. was another obstacle). We were perhaps more fortunate than you are today, as many airlines in Asia, the Middle East and Europe were actively recruiting, and there was a shortage of qualified pilots - unfortunately for you, several carriers in the US have retrenched or shut down, dumping more pilots onto the market.

However, there were those who COULD not, or simply did not WANT to leave Australia, and consequently had to abandon flying for a living altogether. Some, such as Ken Trevillien, and Grahame Day, went on to become successful in flying-related fields, others such as a close personal friend (who was a 13 year F/O with TAA) ventured into real estate and become a multi-millionaire in a period of half a dozen years.

Now is a time to make a choice for life - the overseas scenario will be a big change of lifestyle and not without its difficulties for some. For others, you will wonder why you hadn't take the step earlier.
For the scabs, my best advice to you all is to now get out of aviation - you've screwed it and everyone else for as much as was possible - you are no longer wanted, and you have filled your pockets from others misfortunes for long enough.

To all the rest of you, the old Ansett will probably be revived in a much leaner form, but will be offering salaries that are more realistic and competitive with Virgin Blue. As you have no doubt discovered, the money goes out 3 times faster when there's none coming in!

As a work mate said to me yesterday........
Those who left in 89 left with their entitlements and dignity to persue better careers...... those who stayed behind are now faced with the possibility of nothing and having the almost impossible task of finding overseas employment with their "old" mates......what is that saying about digging your own grave???????......It will catch up with you in the end.

If you lay down with a dog, you will get fleas!

ess jay,
What you say was true for some but not all. Firstly there was the forfeit of one month's pay and for those with less than 10 years service long service and superannuation were much reduced so much so that it was effectively a gift to the airlines. Australian Airlines admitted to picking up $50 milion and you can assume Ansett did likewise.

For those ex(?)-Ansett jet-jockeys wishing to apply to Qantas, I have the following news:

ALL ex-AN crew who apply will, at the very least, make it to the skill/psych stage automatically. There was a push to skip this stage for ex-AN crew, but it was not to be. Each application will be assessed on its own merits and other non-AN pilots should not be discouraged from applying as they still have every chance, although the competition will be more intense (!).

Obviously it would be financially attractive for Qantas to employ ex-AN crew due to the decreased training required. I have no idea at what level (S/O, F/O) ex-AN crew would come in to Qantas. Company documentation says 200 hours on company aircraft is required before promotion to F/O, but a little note at the bottom of that page says this may be varied at the discretion of the chief pilot.

Get writing!

Fortunately most of us have been able to save and invest considerable sums of money over the last 12 years.
We also have our entitlements guaranteed by the government should it become neccesary.
We also know there is absolutely nothing to prevent our right to work anywhere in the world, should we choose to take our experience elsewhere.
We maintain a positive outlook for Ansett and the futures of all its staff, unlike some others.
So for any narrow minded individuals who may be gloating out there, too bad we will prevail.

Thumbs down

radnav it just shows how dumb and ignorant you and your lot are. You just stepped into the bullring sonny and waved a red rag. I wouldn't make too much mileage out of your investments either as you have blood on your hands from handling blood money.
I certainly wouldn't want to be in your shoes when 89ers went o/s we had a comradee in place. O/s can be a lonely place in a strange culture on your own. Enjoy it ar..........le

Ford Airlane,

RE: QF employment for AN pilots.

I think current QF pilots may have a few things to say about direct FO. There are many pilots that had lots of jet time before starting at QF but still went to SO.

The issue of seniority will of course be a contentious one.

The decision for the AN pilots having to pass the computer Psyc./skills testing (stage 1 in the selection process) I agree with. It would defeat the last 6-7 yrs of intakes that have meet the "suitable mold" QF is after in a person.

I will guess there will be a lot of AN pilots now interested in pass posts about what to expect in the testing. Should imagine a few more "mature" applicants walking out of QC3 block in bewilderment. (some may never look at a cube the same way again )

Regards

radnav is obviously AN management trying to give ‘his’ (ex) boys a bit of a feel good factor.

Interesting comment: “Fortunately most of us have been able to save and invest considerable sums of money over the last 12 years.” Hmmmm…. I suppose 30 pieces of silver goes a long way after 12 years investment.

Some heroes will find jobs overseas, but look forward to some interesting (non)exchanges in crewrooms and bars. If you’re not aware of how roundly you’re despised all over the world, you’re about to find out.

Don’t say you weren’t warned to be very well prepared - and bring yout thickest skin with you.

Oh yeah, radnav, your and all your hero mates’ wives are just going to LOVE the convivial social interaction they’ll have with all the other wives wherever it is you take them.

Hey Radnav - here's a tip - buy Aussie dollars now! We're getting more than 2 to the US$!!! You wouldn't believe what we can make out of Australia!

What? Your 30 pieces are in Aussie dollars???

Never mind - as long as you plan to retire in Oz you're not too badly off. I hope you've got enough.

Just a bit confused, Radnav just exactly where will your experience take you? Have you actually bothered to find out? In 89 we all thought that our "experience would take us somewhere", but the truth was a lot different. Yes we went out there, after a lot of hard work, and that now is the difference, that is where we are.

The usual gibes by a few sad chaps.Heard it all before in '89 and nothing. Are some of you finding the courage in life that was absent with the herd mentality you exhibited back then.Somehow I doubt it, but hey if childish insults make you feel better fire away, your only showing yourselves up to be a little bit silly and out of touch with the reality and workings of our modern world.
By the way don't flatter yourself SPAD. I'm sure you and your wife are really very nice folks but your not the only people out there.
Reading between the lines it is sadly apparent that some fellow aviators have still not made peace with themselves.
So go ahead whatever makes you feel better gentlemen.
Cheers for now.
PS Must say it is rather good to have a bit of time at the moment to read this PPRUNE stuff.I know it won't last however.

radnav, you're living in dream world, son. Obviously you haven't thought your predicament through yet.

For starters, your major obstacle to getting another job won't be the 89ers but your colleagues from Ansett. I guess though you'll apply the same job hunting skills as previous, which involve similar tactics to pushing your way to the front of a queue or simply trampling over the top of your mates, all the while telling them to be patient and wait in line.

Your smugness simply indicates an ignorance most of us find hard to fathom. Wake up and smell the roses.

Tip for radnav.

VB will be gearing up as quickly as possible now to pick up the huge number of pax left grounded.

Get a letter off as soon as possible. I'm sure they'll snap up people with your vast experience.

Let us all know how you get on!
