Post Suggested new approach for CASA

I heard a report on radio today which came from the Minister for Finance and announced that the Tax Dept was to change its approach to taxpayers, in effect it is to assume that most people try to do the right thing and therefore it will treat people accordingly, furthermore regulations will be written in language that is designed to be understood by ordinary people. Now while I admit we are still to see this happen, what a wonderful idea for CASA to adopt. Did I just see a flock of pigs flying by my window?

I will say in their defence that my last two contacts with them have been far above average. The staff have been helpful and even provided information in excess of what they were asked for. Perhaps we are starting to see a change in the way CASA operates, but it will take a long time of things being better before I believe that they are.

I cannot and never will agree with the policy of "persuading" people to do the "right" thing by pure intimidation and standover tactics that belong in a schoolyard.

PS - On a side note. Did CASA ever fully bring into active policy the idea of issuing fines instead of NCN's. If so have any of you had experiences with this, considering that the general view at the time would be that when CASA couldn't issue an NCN then, due to lack of convictable evidence they would issue a fine.

Bonzaman:

You are dreaming my friend which is confirmed by the flying pigs. There are political votes associated with simplifying the tax system and CASA is not interested in votes. CASA is only interested in power.

" The time has come ," the Walrus said, . . " To talk of many things :. . Of shoes - and ships - and sealing wax - . . Of cabbages - and kings -. . And why the sea is boiling hot -. . And whether pigs have wings. "

You will recall that as these words were spoken, there was a plot in the making to bring about the downfall of some innocents. Do you recognise the parallel?

Prince, I am not sure what you have in mind as a parallel, unless you are suggesting that CASA resembles Alice in Wonderland!!

Bonzaman:. .Yes, CASA does resemble Alice in Wonderland. Actually I was inferring there is a connection between the actions of those two villains and CASA.

All,. .The two text books you need to survive in Canberra are Alice In Wonderland, and Miachiavelli's "The Prince". At least one bloke called Mick often quotes from Alice In Wonderland.. .Tootle pip!!

Hey Bonzaman,

Don't give up on them completely. In my experience most of the staff try to do the right thing by us (though some are just bureaucrats).

Trouble is... Their are people out there that just plain AREN'T honest, and do the wrong thing deliberately and cut corners etc etc.

Does CASA do much about that? Toothless tigers when it comes to them if you ask me...
