Nomad on the beach
Nomad on the beach
Just saw on the news a Nomad from a Gold Coast operator has made a landing on the beach at southport, nil damage, pilot interviewed but not saying much!

For a second there I thought the post was something about coastal Surveilence out of BME and another boatload.
Good to hear all are OK and sounds like some pretty handy flying was involved.
How many of the widowmakers are still operating in OZ?
Best

To the pilot .. well done mate pax ok aircraft servicable.
Did they manage to move it before the high tide?

Although it may be seen to be a little in the way of heresy .. the Nomad has many strong points and, in some roles, is a fine machine .. but not an aircraft to be treated poorly by the maintenance people .... or flown by ham-fisted pilots ....

Just read the paper, it stated that the Nomad flew of the beach an hour later?
So what was the mechanical problem that was so easily rectfied?
Not that I really believe the newspaper.
Remember years ago up here one ran out of go go juice and landed on a salt plain...

Hi Alt,
What are you implying? Please guys find out the facts before we start a speculation session on here again. They are a good, safe operator that deserves as such. I don't believe this incident bear any relevance to the Islander that ended up on the beach a few years ago

I was in cooly this afternoon aircraft is back in the seaair hangar. Not implying a thing but the front page of the gold coast newspaper shows pictures of pilots on the wing with jerry cans. It was flown off shortly afterwards apparently. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Nomad's good points ?
One very important one comes to mind .. for the commercial operator .. probably the best payload/MTOW ratio around. Can you name another Type in the same general class which is superior ?
How about short and rough strip operation ?
I note that one poster makes a comment regarding a double engine failure. I suspect that the detail here may be mistaken and that the reference is to an early Type developmental problem which was, in turn, related to icing problems. As I recall, a change in the AFM fixed that problem.
No Type is the perfect mix of something for everyone and the Nomad is subject to similar design and operating compromises as is any other Type.
If you look at the history of the Type, most of its "problems" come down to trying to run it with too tight a budget, especially in respect of maintenance. As the aircraft moves into the lower end of the market, worldwide, that sort of problem will probably give the TC holder increasing headaches.
On another note, how many of the posters here have actually either flown the aircraft to any degree, if at all, or had some engineering/maintenance involvement with it ?
I suspect that the Nomad, for a number of typically Australian reasons, has become popular to "bash".
No-one suggests that it is a perfect aircraft ... but it does some things far better than anything else in its class ...

I thought it was you that took the detour on the beach!! Not casting dispersions on your ability my good friend, just from previous experience - remember Lake Amadeus? 50km strips are excellent for touch and go's aren't they.....
I thought the temptation and the chicks on the beach would have put you over the edge and you finally took the plunge.
Was expecting to see your ugly mug on TV laughing like a fool trying to explain to a CASA Rep. that you saw some damn fine bikinis below and had to investigate.
BA out
