Most days Tool Time's little peice of industrial archeology would be very welcome here at the Towers
Nasa, you'll have to forgive me skirting around Oz specific legal issues. As this forum is the source of around 90% of our legal woes is isn't particularly sensible to give succour to the more fragile egos in your industry.
You can all however check out what is happening elsewhere. For example many of you will subscribe to AvWeb's offerings. They are presently facing very expensive legal action for what was said about a very prominent aviation lawyer on their forums.
Our server is located in the States and our daily diet of ping routines show many problems around the world such as the one Woomera began this thread with. We are having problems here in the UK with the main telecoms provider in both traditional and broadband services.
Our opinion is that there are severe budgetary cutbacks amongst many of the worlds providers and the infrastructure is really beginning to show the strain. For the first time ever UK bandwidth shrunk last month. Only one percent but this is shattering news in a field fueled by exponential growth.
Catch 22 again folks. Users like you cutting back annoyed by the worldwide wait and investment bankers recoiling in horror at no immediate fat return if they invest in routers and pipelines.
Meanwhile back at the Towers we've become increasingly frustrated running the site remotely. Service simply isn't there when we have needed it most - many lost ID's from the great server crashes stand as testimony to that.
Ideally we'd like a UK based server with mirror sites on all the major continental landmasses. This has become impossible for the legal reasons I've already alluded to both in the US and Oz.
A UK base is also not as straightforward as we expected. The high value corporate server farms are entirely outside our league in financial terms. Remember folks, it's just three of us who actually put this place on air every day24/7/365 despite having full time jobs elsewhere.
So far the independent/mid range server farms just haven't been able to come up with the support we need. It seems pathetically easy: reboots and daily DAT backups really but they won't offer it contractually although they all hope to 'offer it in the future.'
We're not even that fussed about the Raid topography they favour as long as it is effective and rigorously maintained. Still produces a lot of foot shuffling though.
Tech wise the server we need is a standard format rack mount multi processor at around a gig clock speed. Minimal goodies but from a top notch firm for bios and motherboard support.
The rest we populate ourselves at sensible prices. RAID friendly hard disks, 1 gig of memory Etc. All basic stuff that anyone here who's built or ungraded a desktop is familiar with - it just happens in a strange industrial slimline case.
The nub of it all is we're an ISP manager's worst nightmare. Technically more than competent cheapskates with very demanding requirements 24 hours a day. Our 200 gigabytes a month bandwidth usage puts us firmly in the big corporate clients league but we can't and won't pay the markup they expect.
And to think it all started as a joke in a pub with Danny..... and that fellow PPRuNers is proof positive that drink can be a curse
Regards
Rob Lloyd

Ahha! Just as I always suspected ... it really is all Danny's fault! Poor ol' Rob was just "led astray" by the booze... A cunning plot, to be sure!
But, on the other hand, PT, just think how computer literate you've become, over the years...

Hey, it works fine in Kazakhstan so I don't see what all the fuss is.
Perhaps they have a better telecommunications system here? not likely!

Oh well. Thanks for your efforts Danny, Rob & co. Remember, it's either this or trainspotting!!
PS. The new colour scheme is nice. Did it help with the lag???

I go away for a couple of days and come back to find a completely changed PPRuNe!!!!
OzExpat .... Torres et al has been around long enough to appreciate the need for the "IP Logged" thingy. It doesn't do anything for me either but it does stop the natives from getting too restless, knowing their posts can be traced, which in turn helps reduce the blood pressure of Danny, Towers and Woomera.
There was a time PPRuNe was rather like post - Independance PNG........

Nothing significant with the changes - just whiling away a quiet Saturday afternoon.
They're essentially just colour alterations to effect a little bit of a mood change. They key in much better with a new front end we're working on for the site. We're hoping to appoint an editor to roll over articles and info very quickly on the first page potential new PPRuNers see.
The new colours also tie in much better with our existing logos, the first experimental batch of baseball caps and t-shirts we had delivered last week as well as the already popular PPRuNe wings.
Regards

Nah, just loafing along doing my 900 hours a year and catering to you lot.
We're now bruising the 40,000 visitors a day barrier so there's plenty to do alright. Saturdays are however the quietest day on the site so once we've got the admin stuff out of the way we go into dreaming up ideas mode. Luckily for all of you we very rarely are off on weekends so the potential for mischief is fairly limited.

I'd hate to see what you'd get up to if you were REALLY annoyed at us down 'ere. We might end up with all of the naughty people having their posts flash orange (or something as equally sinister), whilst all of those who suffer from "multi personality" disorders might find a footnote under their posts - "this person suffers from.......", well you know what I mean.
G'day PPT.

Mate look up at the top left hand corner of the site.
Place cursor over the banner, get credit card ready click and follow the instructions.
It's quite painless really and resolves that deep feeling of guilt you get from having so fun for free

Thanks Saro - much appreciated. Gaunty has pointed you in the right direction so start dreaming up your own personalised title.
Oh, and thanks Gaunty! Nice soft sell - weren't ever in sales were you
Rob
PS If the server seemed particularly slow last night and this morning there was a big article about PPRuNe in the Wall Street Journal giving a link. America came visting - Big-Time Severe slowdown here in the UK . 194 of them even registered so lock up your daughters......We can't move for chewing gum and nylons here.

Depends on your definition of 'solve' OxExpat. With that money there could be a problem getting us to keep the site running at all.
Let's see - there'd be my biplane to fly, then the glider Pterodactyl recommended, of course there'd be.......
Actually - I think your Navy would be fending me and Danny off as we try to paddle ashore to start a new life. So what's Christmas Island like this time of year??????

Just a quick note to the Guys in the Towers....Don't come that route with that amount of money.....You would be one of the poorer occupants of the boat

Mr Towers
Christmas island is wet, small, and cloudy, this time of year.
The famouse red crab migration has started(something to count, whileing away your time there) and did you know (interesting aviation trivia) acording to the locals it has the fifth most dangerous airstrip in the world I personaly find this a bit hard to believe what with wars and all, but aparently its because its a bit tricky to land on
