Slow PPRuNe Do not adjust your set the problem is in transmission

If you'v noticed that PPRuNe has been running a little slow lately, it's because of a problem up the line out of Oz.
Oz traffic to the US is generall routed via Fiji or China to Los Angeles for distribution from there, which includes to NYK where the PPRuNe server resides.
I ran a trace in desperation and fetched up against a node run by Exodus in LA that seems to be the problem.
I run a Telstra cable modem and after a bit of discussion they ran a test themselves with the same result.
They have "escalated" the tech request for their people to sort out the Exodus problem as they appear to be one of the Telstra carriers in the US.
They have promised to come back to me in 24 hrs with an answer if it isn't already fixed.

In the meantime persevere, or go make friends with your partner and children all over again whilst we wait ;)

It's not just an Aussie problem, using broadband here in HKG what used to take seconds now takes 1-2 mins.

Buster Hyman 14th Nov 2001 16:45

Is this why the "posts counter" has disappeared Woomera???

the wizard of auz 14th Nov 2001 17:57

Oh, thats good news, I thought it was my puter.....I'll stop hitting it now. :D ;)

Woomera 14th Nov 2001 18:10

Don't know about the 'post counter', except that Danny and the elves have been trying to lower the total load and with one less frame per thingy it might help.

JMJ I suspect that it might be that broadband use different routeing. Telstra have promised to check it out, but the problem seems to be in the US??

Kaptin M 14th Nov 2001 18:51

Likewise here in the Land of the risng sun, Woomera.

It's painful when comapared to other sites.

Lucky NONE of us are so addicted that we'd put up with it, isn't it!!

PilotsPal 15th Nov 2001 01:30

Kaptin M

You know you can't live without it - so why fight it????

Keg 15th Nov 2001 03:11

Much better today though!!!

I'll have to apologise to my wife for all the begging I've been doing to upgrade my machine when it fact it was PPRUNE!!

Towering Q 15th Nov 2001 03:52

Much quicker today. I assumed it had something to do with the ammount of traffic on the net, after all it's always 'peak hour' somewhere. ;)

I didn't get too frustrated, I took Woomera's advice and made friends with my wife...I'll have to wait 9 months to make friends with the children.

nasa 15th Nov 2001 04:45

Keg....Why apologise to your wife, particularly if you feel that you have made progress.....Just keep on hitting the stop key just as the page starts to come up and show her how bad it is, and then go out and upgrade.... :D :D

BTW....Did I tell you one of my companies manufactures computers ;) ;)

Oh Sh!t....Here comes Woomera

Kol Nidre 15th Nov 2001 07:49

My Telstra broadband connection which is normally faster than fast, has certainly been finding the going tuff on Pprune/

OzExpat 15th Nov 2001 18:54

Woomera... maybe the load can be reduced a bit more, by removing the "IP" bit from the bottom of each post? Dunno about anyone else, but it's of no interest to me.

In any event, I'd never have guessed at this problem. PPRuNe is always very slow here - the snails go faster. Have lately been considering trying to connect thru one of the many local Internet Snail Providers... :D

PPRuNe Towers 16th Nov 2001 04:25

I'm afraid we need the IP bit here at the Towers OzExpat. Removing the information on number of posts is simply a bit of Psych Ops to calm down some of our more prolific brethren.

Rob Lloyd

Feeton Terrafirma 16th Nov 2001 14:09

Hey Towers do you actually think that will make a difference? Most of the prolific posters are just as happy without a counter, cos the're addicted to posting.

Not like me ;)

sprocket 16th Nov 2001 15:53

I know what the problem is.

Just remove all the advertising banners, especially them blinking moving ones. Guarantee we'll see things speed up dramatically. ;)

OzExpat 16th Nov 2001 16:40

I think me mate sprocket makes a good point, PT. I'm not saying that you should do away with all the ads coz I know we need the bucks to keep this behemoth going and growing. But maybe they don't need to be so flashy huh? If they don't have to jump off the screen at us, they don't take up so much of the server's time.

And, I dunno about anyone else, but I'm just as able to ignore a flashing ad as a non-flashing one.

But how about this for another idea ... now that you've taken out the number of posts, why not also do away with the "Registered :" (date) thing at the bottom of each post?

Is that an air raid siren I hear...

PPRuNe Towers 17th Nov 2001 03:58

Sorry guys,

October bill for bandwidth and backup went through the $3,000 pacific peso barrier. We're stuck with the ads.

They're all in flash format now so don't really slow us too much - it's the sheer numbers of people using the site combined witht the collapse in pipeline investment/maintenance that hurts us.

You are all able to switch the ads off anyway from within your browser by knocking off the graphics option.

It's a real Catch 22 for us - we need a new server, backbone and back up system and that comes to around $20,000. We have looked at popping a mirrored server down there with you guys but a couple of recent legal decisions in Oz make that a no-no.

A software accelerator is being installed - it may help - it might not. We've specced and priced up the new hardware that we need and it just looks like we're going to have to do it the hard way and sell the relly's into white slavery - again.

And so it goes on. A constant struggle ever since we started the site. Just as well we do it for the kicks and the sheer excitement of avoiding exercise :D

Regards
Rob

nasa 17th Nov 2001 08:47

As a matter of interest, exactly what is it that you have specced and price, what are you currently running, what legal decisions are you refering to????

I know, I know, just a bunch of questions, but may help the gathered throng understand what you put up with on a day to day basis.....Sheeeeet Cap'n, for an extremely reasonable amount of South Pacific Pesos, I'll sell you a complete bloody ISP, with as many servers, max boxes, modems, routers, etc etc and as much bandwidth as you can handle.....christ, I'll sell shares and everyone can have a piece of the pie :D :D

Tool Time Two 17th Nov 2001 16:32

Ah! - Bring back the GOD - (good ol' days) - a single wire up the Centre, with a morse key at each end. (Sigh).
