Has NZALPA Gone Power Crazy or WHAT?!
A review of the recent rules change proposal from NZALPA reveals that they wish to enshrine Authority to Strike within the rules ie, membership of NZALPA is an automatic strike authority!!. .. .No mention of Ratification Process either!!. .. .What Next??. .

Doubt it Dashim. Air NZ are having trouble enough locking out the bailliffs right now. Can't see them locking out the pilots too! I'm really concerned about 'auto-strike' though, imagine that in the wrong hands!. .

I agree that it would be useful to spell out the ratification process more succinctly in the rules, but since ratification is required by the Employment Relations Act 2000, you needn't worry about a small few power crazy individuals steering the union towards oblivion. On that topic, I seem to recall some power crazy individuals, namely M.T. and P.H-B. back in 1990 nearly destroy the union and caused the formation of a scab group! But to say that the organisation is power crazy is a little simplistic. First, as you will know TP, (I admire you for putting your name on the forum - but was that intentional?) for a rule change to be made, first a remit has to be prepared, then it has to be endorsed by the annual conference, then it must be prepared by the board, finally it goes to a membership vote. Hardly "power crazy." Democracy rules, and if there are difficulties with any rule change, surely 1500 members can find and expose them. (But alas, we are lucky to get a 40% voter turnout.)\
Compared to MT and PHB, the current executive is moderate, probably too moderate for my liking, but you can't have it both ways, I suppose.
There are no fears, only skeletons.

TP, the change to the rules was made in order that the rules are consistent with the law of the land nothing more, nothing less. As to being power crazy, as DH says, democracy reigns old chap, given the responses I would say that the rule changes were pretty well accepted by the majority. Incidentally the rules prior to the change also allowed strike notice to be issued on behalf of members without ballot. What it did require was Bargaining authorities. That is the bit that has changed, they are no longer required,
