Post Implications of moving to/working in Australia

I am about to embark on my integrated ATPL course next month at BAe SYSTEMS, Jerez, and cant wait to get out there and start it all. . .. .However, I have also recently got back from a trip to Australia, albeit rather shorter than I would have liked. After coming home and comparing a few factors, I am now very seriousley considering moving to Australia upon completion of my course and *hopefully* getting a job with an airline like Qantas.. .. . I was just wondering if anyone has any experience of this sort of situation or can offer advice on the current job market over there (I am aware of the recent closure of Ansett), relative pay, career progression etc.... .. .Blackknight

Hiya,. .. .Went to Oz a couple of Xmas´ ago and asked a few pilots about job prospects. All of them Qantas.. .. .General consensus of opinion - "You should be so lucky pal".. .. .So I´m told there´s nowt going in Oz. Loads of pilots and not enough jobs. I would love to live there and fly there but it doesn´t look too promising I´m afraid. Maybe someone in Oz is better qualified to answer but if you can´t wait, here ya go.. .. .[edited to correct poor everythingness]. . . . <small>[ 22 March 2002, 18:24: Message edited by: DVR6K ]</small>

You have to be an Australlian citizen to work for the big white kangaroo (QF) and with all of the well trained Ansett guys out of a job, the prospects for the forseeable future would be for a fresh low houred pilot.... well its better that you stay in Europe.

If you come here be prepared for a very difficult time. At present we have A320 pilots driving trucks and regional turbine pilots stacking shelves in supermarkets.. .. .As a new commercial pilot you will be competing against hundreds of others ,for at best a single engine charter job probably in the back of beyond,and out here that really is a long way from anywhere.. .. .QANTAS have around a 90% reject rate for applicants and you may be waiting YEARS for an interview.Unless you are experienced and know someone in the company forget Virgin Blue.. .. .I have been writing to some regionals for nearly eight years without even getting an interview.. .. .If you want to fly you are probably better off waiting in Europe with the licence until things pick up ,you will certainly get to fly better equipment with far quicker progression.. .. .However life out here is much more pleasant than Europe ,depends on your priorities.

There are about 1000 experienced airline pilots out of work from the demise of Ansett and associated regionals. The whole employment scence here is totaly dead. Check out the Dunnunda forum. Esp. the staffcv thread. Most of the pilots that QF are interviewing are ex-AN. Even then, only those with University Quals.are getting an invitation to stage one and two testing. The GA drivers are really p!ssed off. Many here are looking at going to Europe.

Blackknight;. .. .The current flow seems to be going back to 'Mother England'.. .. .I know of a few chaps who looked closer at their family tree, interrogated their nanas and found out they can work in the UK (and with a JAR licence - Europe).. .. .At least two so far have completed UK ATPL and have got a start with some 'no frills' carriers.. .. .Your choice but consider staying in Europe.. .. .If you do what to give it a go down under - you can improve your chances by doing all your training in Australia.

I'm afraid it doesn't look good Blacknight.. .. .As a Pom I went to Australia where I flew for five years before returning to Europe. Why? Well, much as I loved it, don't regret a thing and plan to go back one day it's true that progress from piston engine aircraft is much, much quicker here.. .. .Unless you've the right to a passport I wouldn't rate your chances of getting a work visa, especially with all the unemployed Australian pilots they have at present.. .. .My advice, unless there is some massive change between now and the completion of your course, would be to stay in Europe.

G'day mate,. .. .Your best bet is to stay in Europe and ride the wave of the recovery. Enjoy the flying and in a few years time start using your saved money to enjoy holidays down under. A Pound (or Euro?)goes a long way down there.... .. .You're lucky, at least you won't be homesick.. .. .All the best with your course and subsequent interviews etc.. .. .LL

If flying airlines is your be-all and end-all, then the above advice is good advice. . .. .However, if living in Australia is more important to you, then get yourself a residency visa, do your training here; it's much cheaper, you get to know people along the way, and it will train you much better for the Australian flying conditions than anywhere else in the world. . .. .My other little gem is, never put all your eggs in the aviation basket!

Hi Blackknight,. .I would agree up to a point with the comments raised in the past. Living in Aust is great, but you need work. If you were perhaps to undertake the JAR ATPL, and get some turbine experience in Europe as the economies there up-swing over next 2-3 years. It is a relitively easy process to convert a JAR to Aust ATPL licence, but jolly difficult, and expensive to go the other way. . .Basically, to convert ICAO CPL/IFR or ATPL to Aust you need to:. .1. Pass Aust class 1 medical.. .2. Pass CPL law exam. (open book). .3. Pass IFR (IREX) law exam. (open book). .4. Pass IFR flight test. (Light twin aircraft).. .5. Pass ATPL law exam (open book)if you wish to upgrade to an Aust ATPL licence (given that you hold an ICAO ATPL licence at that time). When I was living in England in the mid 80's a survey came out in the Independant saying that 49% of all people in England would immigrate to Australia if they could!

Here is one more....

Why would you want to earn OZ dollars if you don't have to?
