I expect QF will now hit Virgin Blue over the head with a 'big stick' during winter.

Virgin had planned to fly in their own right to OZ some years ago so I guess this isn't really new news.

B.Mac. .Bad business unfortunately cost 16000 jobs. I don't think it was Richard Bransons fault that Ansett was run by inept idiots. He has taken advantage of it. . .Should he not expand and let Qantas have everything at the price they dictate.. .Virgin will become a force equal to Qantas giving true competition and choice. This is much better than what we had before. Ansett could have done it.

Rampsuper. .I don't think Richard Branson is responsible for AN's demise, though DJ's start up certainly didn't help us any. He's an astute businessman who is using AN's exit to his advantage.. .I am not happy with his recruitment practises in the F/A department. Ask any DJ Captain who he'd prefer at the back when the s#*+ hit the fan.. .The whole "we are going to offer An staff 1000 jobs" is a publicity ploy.. .Have friends who sang and danced in their interviews. Most will miss out as they're over 30. Very experienced, intelligent customer service focused individuals, but by VB philosophy ,not worth a chance. More's the pity.. .Until they change these practises I think they'd be dreaming to expect 50% market share. Might appeal to the holiday market but grates on the business one.

As someone else pointed out, this is not a new plan.. .. .We were told some time ago (long before the demise of Ansett), that Virgin Atlantic will be operating to Australia soon, linking up with Virgin Blue domestic flights.. .. .They said at the time that there were plans also to do some of their maintenance here in Australia, from memory it was in Brisbane.

BMAC I don't follow your logic.. .. .
quote:
Damn shame Fox/Lew didn't call his bluff. Eh?. .. .All airlines are there to make money, we live in a capitalist society. . .. .People in here talk about the demise of Ansett as if their favourite Aunt died. I extend my sympathy to people who have lost their jobs, and the families devastated but let's not get misty eyed about hoe great it was. If it was so great why did it go bust.. .. .I think you are mistaken about Virgin's potential. I believe that there will be no stopping them now. Australian's seem to love to support the (perceived) under dog. Witness politicians at election time claiming THEY are the party behind in the polls!. .. .I agree price is not everything. My high school economics taught me that if a product or service is similar then price is the motivator. If you need to go from SYD to MEL then price probably is everything. . .. .Somewhere else a poster drew parallels to bus travel. I believe this is valid. ( Not comparing Pilots to bus drivers however, a la Bob Hawke!)

Cool

VA is also effectively a second outlet for SIA to exploit the Australian market.

Cool

Yes, there have been rumours for years.. .. .What I meant (maybe I didn't explain it very well), was that we were advised by someone from Virgin Atlantic that this was definitely going to happen, as opposed to wild rumours.. .. .Virgin Atlantic to come through to Australia, with a substantial maintenance base in Brisbane to service their aircraft, and maybe eventually Virgin Blues aircraft as well.

Sir R hinted 12 to 16 months ago that he would like to operate into Australia. The rumour of a maintenance base is a new one, VS subcontract all maint above A checks! . .. .With the HKG-SYD flights with AN stopping all the other carriers are stepping uo their flights (I belive SQ are increasing frequency on the SIN-BNE route).

B.Mac. .You present as the classic case to support the practice of some companies of employing pilots that have been recomended to them by present employees rather than via the CV folder.. .. .You have told us that you were one of the lucky ones who has been able to find a job.Was that with VB. If so did you have the courage to express your true feelings to the interview panel as you have revealed to us all via your first post. If so,and subsequently employed,I suggest that you were indeed lucky.. .. .If you are working for VB,Richard Brandson pays your salary, and as such deserves your loyalty.
