Post Armed guards on Australian aircraft!

Yesterday Oct 2 John Howard said the government would be introducing new counter terrorism measures.

''We have agreed to a policy of randomly placing security officers on domestic flights and on international flights both into and out of Australia to better ensure the safety of the traveling public,''

''These security officers will be highly trained and armed.''

''There will be debate in the community about the placement of security officers who are armed on aircraft, but we do live in a new environment,''

Other measures will include strengthening cockpit doors, enhancing baggage X-rays and doubling the capabilities of special forces within the Australian Defense Force.

New powers for the Australian Security Intelligence Organization to detain people suspected of posing security risks is also on the agenda. There will also be a new law relating to terrorism as a crime, max penalty life imprisonment.
