AFAIK there are no maritime NDBs in Australia. That was mainly a European/North American phenomenon, and they're being rapidly superceded by marine GPS/D-GPS system.

Do you mean ADF: Australian Defence Force or ADF: Automatic Direction Finder?

Maritime?

Downwind:-

There are no maritime DF stations left now, the requirement for ships to carry a DF receiver was dispensed with as of February 1999 under full implementation of GMDSS.

From personal experience I can tell you the DF receiver was the least useful, and least loved, piece of equipment on the ships bridge, and no-one misses it now unless they were using it to listen to the cricket on the AM broadcast band!

From memory, the old stations were at Cape Leeuwin, Cape Otway, Cape Schank, Cape Wickham, Gabo Island (on 308Khz I seem to recall) and Booby Island. Occasionally I used them for check-bearings on the ship's DF receiver, provided it was in daylight hours and not witnin 2 hours of sunrise or sunset (to avoid night effect).

If you can get hold of a 1998 copy of the Admiralty List Of Radio Signals, Radiodetermination And Special Services Volume, that will have the relevant information. Won't help much though as no more signals being radiated for mariners.

Try calling the Australian Maritime Safety Authority RCC in Canberra on 1800-641792.

I am sure that one of the Old Salts there will be able to help you! <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
