Post So now the other boot finally drops - SQ shows its hand.

Weeeellllllll sportsfans. .. .It would appear I was right 12 months ago with the scenario of SQ allowing Ansett to fail by placing an underskilled NZ in control to drive it into the ground.. .. .They were well aware that it was not viable without cauterising the top 4 levels of management and now it seems they have succeeded.. .. .The airline itself was never the problem - great staff and terrific service. It was just managed into oblivion.. .. .News tonight was that SQ was interested in funding a full service competitor to QF - surprise surprise - NOT!!! The landing slots and assets can now be glommed at bargain basement prices.. .. .Thankfully they say they will be using ex Ansett staff. They would be dumb not to. . .. .They have cauterised the top 4 levels of management but destroyed countless lives in the process.. .. .I do hope they restart Ansett in whatever form but Clarry the blind miner can see what they have been doing. Totally amoral SQ. . .. .There were other avenues but obviously the shame of Asia did not wish to "lose face".. .. .They have now.. .. .Live with it SQ - the airline is the people and those who fly with them and the hate will never dissipate once your hand is totally revealed.. .. .Us white eyes may be green - but we are not that grassy.. .. .EWL

Rumor yesterday (Monday) at Tulla was that SQ people were 'sniffing around'.. .. .Perhaps the fat lady is warming up for an encore.. .. .

First it was ANZ's fault, then it was the Govt's fault, and now its SQ's fault. Was it ever Ansett's fault? . .. .I know the conspiracy theory is popular but it has little to do with the reality of the situation. You give SQ far too much credit in seeing this one coming. Don't froget that they've blown the best part of half a billion dollars in getting to this current position. And of course, they are not so stupid as to ignore an opportunity when they see it either, as exists now.

knackered - I believe they saw this path as their cheapest option.. .. .I have been expecting this for a long time.. .. .The overall result for them will be far cheaper than trying to reinvent the Ansett wheel with its diverse fleet.. .. .Best. .. .EWL

Thumbs down

As I have said previously on this forum - Singapore Airlines never has, never was (Ansett) and never will be interested in a domestic airline in this country.. .. .They are sniffing around now to see what assets can be purchased (bargain basement prices of course!)as a future investment. I would suggest the terminals and the maintenance base are the purpose of their visit.. .. .The former Ansett staff have been led on long enough by false hopes and dreams, pinning anymore on SQ will be another belt in the gutz.

Virgin and Patricks have just announced their merger on the news. What news did you see Loco?. .They reckon they'll end up with 50% of the market. What happens to the star alliance?

Whiskery - I would be the last one to want to offer false hope to my mates at AN. This was a TV news item here tonight that SQ was wanting to open a full service competitor to QF.. .. .Much and all as I find their involvement in the whole debacle shamefull - I just want to see AN # whatever in whatever form back like everyone else does.. .. .Best mate. .. .EWL

B.MAC. .. .There is a dirty big hole in Star Alliance which I am sure is driving SQ in the region to fill at least the major port dilemma.. .. .The other major hole is the former SAA alliance so they cant afford any more shutout areas. . .. .Their one strong suit is Canada which is lost to One world on the cheaper limited mileage fares but having an Aussie hole is a major loss even if it is just the $300 extra to get to a star alliance port from a regional centre.. .. .Fear not - they have done their sums.. .. .Oh and sorry - was on WIN news that SQ was considering a competitor for QF with a second full service airline along AN lines - only half answered your post.. .. .Regards. .. .EWL. . . . [ 12 March 2002, 09:17: Message edited by: Eastwest Loco ]

This was known as long as a fortnight ago as fact, as told to the crew ferrying HYY to TLS by the GATX rep!!!. .. .Stay tuned.. .. .Remember, trusta Busta for the good oil!!!

When the question of SQ was being discussed once before I forecast that SQ would show its hand 8 days later. I shouldve said 8 months shouldnt I. To those who have intimate knowledge with the way SQ does things, this should come as no surprise. Its only the early days at the moment but theres going to be more "surprises" in the coming months.. . . . [ 12 March 2002, 11:11: Message edited by: Slasher ]

Buster - you obvously read my initial "blue sky mining" post.I am really sorry it seems to come to have come to fruition. . .. .B.MAC - the move will be hard but I personally feel that though your skills are a major loss to Australia that you will do far better overseas in the medium term. . .. .May every post be a winner for you mate.. .. .As for the TV report - clear as day. My sons remarked you were right Dad. . .. .Getting any positive comment out of a 15 and 17 yo is next to impossible at best.. .. .The local industry will be far too controlled for the next few years until some sanity returns.. .. .EWL. . . . [ 12 March 2002, 11:41: Message edited by: Eastwest Loco ]

He who hesitates is lost...b.mac...then again, once bitten, twice shy...and remember to look before you leap because people in glass houses are worth two in the bush....now I'm confused!. .. .I stuck around for FLEW. I'd love to see another full service airline running, but I doubt it will include me, I can't afford another couple of months. Regardless of who they are, this country cannot support 3 major airlines.

Question

Slasher I think you are right. Just heard from one of the Asian contacts (spy) " a third Airline will be flying in Aus by years end". Using as much of AN leftovers as possible. There are no STAR alliances left and this is a requirement in South Pacific ".. . Virgin/Corrigan is not being seen as a threat. They are being viewed as a freighter operation.. .Qantas is THE threat .They are big and about to be allowed to float on the international market.. .They are viewed as THE major player .. .Excellent management .The weak spot being union inflexability. Hence the AN demise with Govt help.. . So if you get the drift the next player is going to be BIG. ie not in the same arena as foxloo.... . So Loco this contact knew that Tesna was over, the evening prior to the collapse(Asian time).Stay tuned.Watch this space.CHEERS.

AAP. .. .Virgin deal brings certainty. .AAP. .12mar02. .. .THE Virgin Blue-Patrick Corp deal brings much-needed certainty to Australia's domestic aviation market, according to analysts.. .. .Salomon Smith Barney aviation analyst Jason Smith said the market was now returning to rational duopoly after the turbulence caused by Tesna's aborted attempt to revive Ansett. . .. ."It's clearly a positive for the industry, for Qantas and the travelling public as a whole," Mr Smith said. . .. ."It reinforces the return to a rational duopoly and I think it'll probably get the regulators off the back of Qantas. . .. ."It increases the barriers to entry and gives some certainty to the marketplace overall." . .. .Mr Smith said the $260 million for 50 per cent of Virgin Blue was a particularly opportunistic move by Patrick with a view that they can make a fair shake of money down the track. . .. .He said Salomon Smith Barney was reiterating its outperform rating on Patrick and strong buy on Qantas. . .. .One analyst, who did not wish to be named, said the deal took pressure off Virgin Blue for a capital-raising float. . .. .He said it also meant players in the domestic market had a clearer idea of where they stood. . .. ."I think the reality is that you don't have Virgin or Patrick looking at any more than 25-30 per cent of the market, which leaves 75-80 per cent for Qantas, which is about what everybody is expecting," he said. . .. ."That leaves both players with a robust business." . .. .He said the deal would not change Virgin's capital requirement as most of the Patrick money would go to Virgin chief Richard Branson. . .. ."The major capital requirement is the Ansett terminal at Sydney Airport, he said. . .. ."I would have thought it's probably taken the pressure off for a sell down to institutional investors but that could be on the cards at some stage." . .. .Another analyst said: "There's still a little uncertainty in the market about how quickly Virgin's going to grow and whether there will be other parties involved as well".
