Columbia, this wouldn't just happen to be a certain BNE-based 747 "Captain" (yes, he qualifies to wear the "hero" tag...ABSOLUTELY!!) around whom I based a question, wrt criminal records and the holding of an ATPL, a week or so ago - would it?
If so, it wouldn't surprise me in the least!!

Words (almost) fail me. Here is an example of an individual who had a proven record BEFORE he entered airlines. Who, after entry CONTINUED the same pattern of petty misdemeanours. During that unmentionable year, was probably the first to make a "hero" of himself (in spite of a LOT of personal one-on-one from yours truly). And even after securing a position in the "Top 10" of Australia's ONLY surviving domestic airline, still finds his urge to "sample" goods beyond his control.
In all truthfulness, I would have to say that this person MUST be sufferiing from a "disease" akin to alcoholism - kleptomania. As much as he is disliked by his peers who did NOT return, as much as those who DID, he NEEDS to seek medical rehabilitation.
Conditions such as these aren't detected in the 6/12 monthly comprehensive medicals, however, surely the employer and CASA must be aware there is an ongoing problem if they are privvy to Police information. Impacting on flight/crew scheduling, when a cockpit crew member is "detained" by the constabulary, should certainly alert the company to check to see if this was a first time offender (which in this case, I believe, would have shown that THIS was at least the fourth time he had been caught!).
BTW, Woomera, where IS that thread? I've searched for it, and had a mate call me, also looking.

I doubt very much that ****** would be able to ascertain any previous criminal history due to our privacy laws.
How would he be able to obtain an ASIC (Airport Security) ID card after the Federal Police conduct a criminal record check? I would have thought that this type of history would prevent him from holding one.

I suspect I detect a slightly disapproving tone to your question.
I think the thread you seek is here.
I only had to search back 3 or 4 pages to find it, sitting there in all its glory!

Hairy all ASIC holders must sign an approval form so the employer can ascertain a security clearance. The subject Captain was absolutely not a QF employee!

Not at all (a disapproving tone} Woomera. In fact I after I had looked through 6 pages, and couldn't find it using "search" on the D&G forum, I thought that perhaps it had been moved to the Questions site. Discussing THIS thread (about our light-fingered 747 captain) with a mate, he also commented that he was not able to locate it. Hmmm, guess I'd better bone up on the eye execises before my next medical!
Thanks for the marker, that makes it easier - but then we all know that pilots have to be spoonfed!
And back to the subject in hand...it's sad that an individual with his income - and he's been on ABSOLUTELY the highest salary since his return to ****** in August '89 - that HE doesn't recognise he's got a problem that obviously DEMANDS professional counselling. Certainly ****** must be under some obligation to also provide assistance, as it's not just the occasional isolated incident. He has been banned from a surburban hardware store, after the cameras caught him "red-handed". Very sad.

would this qualify as a mandatory sentencing issue in the NT?
surely if they can send a kid to jail for a few packets of chips then he would go as well.
also, how do they look upon shoplifting in Singapore?

Kaptin M: If as you say the above mentioned Capt has been caught on 4 previous occasions, then doesn't that answer your question? He has been allowed to continue to operate with a criminal record.
Secondly if the Japanese authorities charge him will he be allowed to operate into Japan again? although I suspect with another airline!!

Bottums Up
Wasn't there an AN captain dismissed in the last two years or so for pilfering?
I have a vague recollection one was caught with rolls of dunny paper in their nav bag, after being suspected for some time of being light fingered.
