Easy with the names, gentlemen, please. The subject of this discussion is a relatively young (around 44) 747 captain who was junior 737 f/o at the time of the dispute - he immediately went to 737 command when he accepted Abeles contract (in hindsight, I guess the advice to not go back because he'd be "stealing someone else's position" must have been like a big, juicy steak being offerred to a starving, rabid dog!), and as he was an extremely early returnee, was considered senior enough by "management" to take a 747 command with its introduction. Not being shy about the reasons he returned, he abused engineering staff when one of the company's aircraft went u/s, ordering them to get the aircraft fixed, as "it is costing ME money, not being able to fly" - needless to say he didn't have too many friends with the selfish attitude he displayed. I guess though, that he did share the same trait as the guy you mentioned, inasmuch as he would take ANY remaining uneaten meals off the aircraft, on the pretext that he neede to feed his family....geez, again in hindsight, he just could not help himself!

AN Captain. I believe the 'coveted' objects were parts for building model aeroplanes.

From what I gather from staff in AN said individual was very low in the popularity stakes amongst his peers.

Is this person still incarcerated and has this sort of thing ever happened before in Japan??
I know he would have been flogged in Singapore/Malaysia or lost his hand in some of the gulf states.

One other thought.......if the Japanese authorities do ban this person from operating into that country for reasons of theft (if convicted) is it incumbent upon Ansett to provide the individual with an alternative endorsement if he is unable to perform the job by entering Japan (even as an alternate)?

Makes you wonder at the legalities.

Columbia,

Thanks for that info. I asterisked out the name and I apologise to those in that company. I should have done that in the first place. For some reason I forgot that the other airline flew to that location.

I was under the wrong impression that the criminal record check was soley an issue for the Feds. It now makes sense as the airline's security section issues the card after receiving the go ahead from the Feds.

All regulatory and criminal issues aside, why is a person of this calibre being allowed to continue to command any companies airliner. Whether it's a "medical" condition or a serious character flaw doesn't matter.

If his reasoning processes are so fraught, then in a environment that requires clear, rational, disciplined, ethical and cogent thought and action, it is only a matter of time.

I'd like to see counsel for the defence plot his way around the airline companies duty of care given the captains past record.

"Well you honour, we were aware of his little pecadilloes, but did not consider they would impinge on his professional skills".

But then I spose that brings us back to the regulator.

Anyone read Wouks' "The Caine Mutiny" recently.

Just out of curiosity, isn't there a clause in AN employment contracts (or indeed in any airline) along the line of "Employee not to bring company into disrepute"???

If so, why has this person not been binned long ago?

If not, I will be suitably stunned.

Cool

They probably deleted THAT clause in 198#.....otherwise they would had to have sacked the LOT, and get rid of The Fat Man!

Anyway. I'm sure Ansett will get even MORE publicity out of this one, once the hounds get onto it!

Question

If this guy did have a known problem then how responsible will his employer be for suppling the legal aid, and paying his fines? They maintained his employment supposedly in full knowledge that he might one day end up doing something like this!

Exclamation

A further chat with AN mates reveal that this supposed individual may have been discharged from an RAAF Pilots course many years ago for pilfering from AFCANS (Air Force Canteen Services).

Add to this what Kap M has hinted at in relation to hardware related cases and you have a definite pattern and a repeat offender if all is true.

Couple this with a few mentioned cases of abusing staff, behaving in a petulant manner on more than one occassion and run-in's with management then these are not character traits I would expect of an individual with such responsibility.

Aviation certainly is a small world wherever you go!

Then there's the "borrowed" Hotel bus caper & riding the local's push bikes into the canal caper as well. Other bods involved on those occassions.

Kapin M, we "hounds" were among the first to hear last Tuesday, to be precise. We (well some of us) didn't think it would be news to anybody, knowing a little about the persona involved.

The restraint in refraining from running with a story such as this one seems a little out of character for you "newshounds", Brenda!
I mean, your counterparts in the U.K. made a complete television episode on pilots supposedly drinking out of hours, and yet, when you have knowledge of a prime example of one of Australia's two major airlines' SENIOR 747 Captains with an obvious problem, working with that company's OBVIOUS consent, and able to hold an ID card which has been issued to persons of supposedly good character, you feign non/dis-interest.

There's no need to destroy this particular individual's career (although I believe he's tried his damndest to do that since his RAAF days, as a television addict!), however there surely must be some questions that even Jimmy Olsen would find hard to avoid!

Brenda

C'mon that's a bit cute.

'Citizen Kane' must be spinning in his grave.

Excuse me, but I thought your job was to report the news to us plebs, not "decide" whether it would 'play' or not.

You can be sure "us plebs" would be really interested, in the extracurricular pecadilloes of the man we entrust our well being to whilst airbourne. But then Rupert doesn't have any influence on what does and doesn't get published by our fearless guardians of the free press.

Gaunty, in your post B4 this last one, you mentioned the possible 'saftey' implications as a direct result of this individuals' seemingly 'fragile' state of mind........Well, I'd sincerely LOVE to hear from anybody who currently has to work with this person, in ANY capacity, and whether or not any of these 'collegues' have ever approached the Employer with their fears?
I ask this because there seem to be plenty of people contributing here, who have either worked along side this person, or are aware of his behaviour problems...please allow me to quote Scooter...
Couple this with a few mentioned cases of abusing staff, behaving in a petulant manner on more than one occassion and run-in's with management
...
and I'm interested to know what you tell crewing when you find yourself rostered to sit in the right-hand seat next to this character....

The space above indicates the obvious answer to THAT question

Do you not think that somebody would surely have taken notice and actioned something against this person, had his collegues had the balls to state to the employer what they can so obviously state here on a public BBS???? Don't flame me....it makes PERFECT sense...... X amount of people REFUSE to fly with this guy, GEE, THERE MUST BE A PROBLEM????? D'oh.

So Gaunty I take your view, but I shake my head in amazement that some of you out there, who claim to be professional pilots, saftey concious etc...yet, knowingly, you have in effect condoned his behaviour.

Nothing personal to anyone at all intended, but it just goes to show that, at the end of the day....safety in the eyes of some, comes a distant second to ridiculing.

Go Girl

Right on.

I don't think it's a safety issue, I know it is. There is litigation in the courts of Singapore and the US that revolve very precisely around the state of mind of the Capt, with his employer running for cover. Different state of mind perhaps but neither healthy in a command environment.
