take the job or not...??
I have a question for whoever is answering.
I recently followed the trend of the advice on most threads here and relocated "up north". Since arriving I have met a few pilots, made a few contacts, and done the typical visit to most of the operators. Was in the running for one job, but didn't have the hours.
Now it looks like I will be a good chance of getting a job on the upper east coast in Qld. The job is low hours, probably only 350-400 hours per year and I would assume the pay won't be real flash.
My dilemma is, after relocating myself and fiance to Darwin, finding a nice place in the city etc, should I be considering not taking a job elsewhere because of the POSSIBILITY of getting a higher-hour job up here.
This question may seem a little strange to some, but it seems like I haven't really given it a good enough go up here. Naturally, I cant help but think to take my first bloody job offer I get. If I knock back the Qld job, and I am here in a year with no flying job, I am gonna feel like a right TOOL.
any advice or opinions welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

Radar,
Tough call but take the job!!!
In todays environment there are many many out there as you know. As an operator it would be great to be able to give every up and coming pilot a go but it just aint gonna happen.
Whats the worst case scenario? Go there do December Jan Feb Mar - you decide you don't like it, you've got 50-100 hours more under your belt and then you can come back a little more employable..............
Good luck either way.....
HA

thankyou HA, I know I can always rely on your replies to give an honest and sensible view.
I definitely considered going then coming back about March if need be, my only concern was that it may put me at the back of "the que" in terms of getting tryout up here. I have heard that operators like to see a guy has been here a while, somehow making him "more keen" than others. Does this sort of situation exist..??
What other reason would I have to be STOOPID enough to come at the start of the builup..!!

I agree with Hi Alt for what it is worth.
The key to this industry is to remain current. If you can tick the hours over where you are, and you are prepared to do that, stay where you are. If you are not flying at all, there will come a period where it doesnt matter how many hours you have, operators wont look at you. An example of this is Ansett guys and gals with thousands of hours on say a twin otter prior to joining and flying heavy metal, but twotter operators wont look at them, because it was too long ago.... Same thing happens in GA.
Stay current, and stay employable.
I know moving is expensive, but another positive is a proven history of a willingness to relocate looks good on a resume.
FNQ aint such a bad place to be either!!!!

TAKE THE JOB!!!! I was in Darwin for 8 months and thought I was in the running for atleast 3 jobs, but didn't get any of them. 8 months of pouring beers really gets on your nerves, especially when you can't afford to go flying because you are just making enough money to pay your bills. Everyone goes to Darwin, so if you have been offered a job take it. I have been in Cairns for almost 2 months and am loving it. Even though I am not flying every day I am flying atleast 2 days a week, and the log book is ticking over.
Are you certain that the job is yours if you get to FNQ. Otherwise it is a long drive. If you are coming through Cairns drop me a mail, we could catch up for a beer. Although If you are in Darwin could you pick up my Carton of Crown Larger from HA, which I won at last years Casurina Crawl for the boat races......
Think it over, but if it is 'your' job, TAKE IT!!!!

Agreed -- take the job. It's a strange aspect of human nature to initially be willing to take any job, then as a job appears become choosy about what job to take. It's YOUR career. Stay current, put entries in the logbook and move around as req'd. Trust me .. your worst flying job will be better than your best bar job.
My 5 pence worth.
