RIP AudioGalaxy

AG is the latest song-sharing site to get the same bloodey bullet that killed Napster.

Can anyone suggest another site (that hasnt been shot yet) which is as striaghtforward as AG was? Also would removal of the AG program off the hard disk be better accomplished through MS Add/Remove program, the AG Unistall program itself, or Norton Uninstall? Heard that its removal can screw up Windows if not done carefuly.

Thanks.

PS Im runnin W98SE.

cossack 3rd July 2002 10:17

What_does_this_button_do? 3rd July 2002 10:38

watergate 3rd July 2002 10:41

Another good one is www.kazaa.com

Slasher 3rd July 2002 10:55

I had an "event" Butts. Actual a few "events" all at once. Its my 1st time on the Net for nearley 6 weeks. Still recovering and may be away for a bit longer yet. Will tell all when I can.

Tried WinMX but its not too good. Will look at kazaa later. Thanks.

Another good one is www.kazaa.com

Are you sure about that? Read on........

Several file sharing companies including Grokster, Bearshare, Limewire and Kazaa, bundled a product called ClickTillU Win, which several anti-virus manufacturers classified as a Trojan Horse. Their response? “We didn’t know!”. Neither Cydoor technologies, who distributed the Trojan to the file sharing companies, nor any of the file sharing companies, had performed even a preliminary insection of the software to see what it did”.
For Privacy activists, the worst file-sharing company is probably Kazaa. Though Audio Galaxy came with the Gator Offer companion, users had the option of not downloading it. Kazaa insists that its users download its partner programs, which in the past have included NewDotNet (which sells Domain names but also causes crashes and Net connection problems when installed.) SaveNow (Fully blown spyware) and Cydoor ( which displays ads and causes pop-ups) all worrying programs according to privacy activists.
If you downloaded Kazaa this year, you might have also installed software used to create a kind of private peer to peer network (with other Kazaa users) called Altnet, which is run by Brilliant Digital. They want to use peoples private computers to process and serve the advertisements to other people, effectively laying the bandwidth cost of providing advertisements on the users of Kazaa…………..

If you are now starting to feel worried, check out www.ad-aware.com Alternatively check the net for the hacked version of Kazaa without the offending program attachments, its called Kazaa Lite.

Welcome back :)

innuendo 4th July 2002 16:01

Kazaa, & spyware etc.
Have a look at this site for an opinion on Kazaa and others.
http://www.aluminumstudios.com/spyware/
I suspect they may have a point about some of these file sharing operations. I seemed to have downloaded an advertising "something" when I looked at Audiogalaxy.
There is a thread here about it if you search back.

Slasher 6th July 2002 07:12

Yeh thanks guys. Im into my 7th week of hell. Im only around now and then when Im up to it. All my puters got burnt to ashes (long story) and Im still tryin to recover all my old URLs.

Ive alreadey d/loaded Ad aware and its a bloodey good program that. And Ive read up on Kazaa and confirm whats been said about it here. Not too many wise choices around these days for swappin music. :(

okeydokey 6th July 2002 14:23

For what it's worth slasher, I use adaware and am happy with winmx.
But not as happy as i was with audiogalaxy.

GoGirl 6th July 2002 14:30

Bugga me! Now I've got worries about Kazzaa, as it's what I use! Can anyone tell me, if I have ad-aware, will this fix the problems associated with Kazzaa mentioned here? Ive got it on the lappy, but not on the PC which is where I do my file sharing thingy from.

A side note to all that and far more importantly, Slash it's really great to see your words in the puter again. Must admit, with the bits and pieces of information you've been able to give us, it leaves the impression you've been through hell and back mate, and you usually don't mince your words ;)
If physically unwell, I hope you are getting better every day.

Devils Advocate 7th July 2002 08:08

Try this: GROKSTER

E.g. I just checked and Grokster presently has 1.47 million users online, who are sharing 252,144,000 files that total 1,799,040 Gb !

Nb. When you install it say NO to ALL the ad-ins that it'll prompt you to accept (that is unless you want them).

Nb. The application uses the same interface that the 'original' Morpheus used to use before it got involved with Gneutela and went down hill big time (imho).

Enjoy ! :D

Slasher 7th July 2002 08:56

Ill give that one a go Devils A, havin a hard time tryin to connect to that URL.

Yeh thanks GG. Your right, whenever I have events Im normaly quite blabbey but I sat on these ones as they were quite personal.

But suffice to say:

* house got burnt down. No house.

* Slasher got burnt down. Still recovering.

* Computers got burnt down. Bought new ones.

* Mum died :(

Never rains but it sure as sh!t pours.

Will explain in detail once Im up to it.

PilotsPal 7th July 2002 09:54

So very sad to read that. You need help with recovering one or two URLs we shared, get in touch.

Bird Strike 7th July 2002 12:29

I'm really sorry to hear that you've been through such a difficult time Slash.

I hope you'll be feeling better soon, both physically and psychologically. If you want to have a shoulder to cry on or whatever, you have my e-mail.

OzExpat 7th July 2002 13:21

Commisserations on the death of your mum Slash. You've certainly had a torrid time of it mate. Hope you heal up quickly, with no major lasting damage. I know that houses ain't easy to come by in your corner of the planet, but its ultimately replaceable as is yer lappy. Life isn't replaceable mate, so I'm glad you're still alive, if not perhaps exactly kicking up yer heels.

Get well soon mate.

Did your housemate get out okay?

redsnail 7th July 2002 13:25

Slasher

Slasher, know how you feel re death in the family and you weren't there. :(

As for your little hassles. A house can be replaced, you can't be. Take care of yourself.

PilotsPal 8th July 2002 09:50

Can only echo what OzEx and Reddo have written. What news of Je and Ja?

Binoculars 8th July 2002 12:24

Commiserations Slasher, and genuinely so, from somebody who hasn't always seen eye to eye with you. Fate can be a real bastard sometimes, and you've had a nasty run of luck. The death of a parent is difficult at best, horrendous at worst, and often something we are left to deal with ourselves.

I join with the others here in hoping there's no lasting damage to you personally from your other misfortunes, and wish you a speedy return to JB.

Binoculars 8th July 2002 13:16

Umm, now where were we? Oh yeah, music thingies.

I just had a look at Grokster and was surprised to see it listed Windows Media Player as a system requirement; can that be right? I've used WMP for the last couple of years, and as a multi purpose player it was the best imo, but I'm sick to death of it's latest incarnations deciding what I can and can't do, especially when it comes to ripping. I will keep it for mpegs, but I'm on the lookout for another music player, and I'm immediately suspicious of Grokster.

For making mp3's out of WAV's I have just downloaded FreeRip; ripping is all it does, and all it promises to do; simple and very effective. Highly recommended.

I suppose I might finally have to give in to Winamp for a player.

:(

Slasher 9th July 2002 06:43

Yeh thanks everyone. Couldnt make mums funeral since I was banged-up in hospital. Should be discharged in another week. Yeh managed to rescue the maid and yeh PP Id like those shared URLs. I lost the lot.

Housemate was away when things started catching fire and has alreadey arranged a pad.

Will still pop in when I can depending on the nurses mood. Some days she'll let me get on my new puter and other days she wont. She knows I bee-line for porn and it gets her real cranky when I flash BJ pics at the other (delighted) Nam patients in my ward-room!

"Hey Nguyen! Check it out mate!"

Dawww.....Shrasher! Stop hurt me many!"

Nguyen is an 85 year-old bastard in the next bed recovering from a prostate op! :p

PilotsPal 9th July 2002 06:56

Poor Slash - it never rains does it? What news of the pet rat?

Imagine being in hospital here - the NHS is still big on mixed wards.

So sorry to hear you lost your unrivalled porn collection - I do hope you didn't risk your dick trying to save that. Let me know which email addy to send those URLs. Might be able to add one or two others.

sprocket 9th July 2002 08:01

Sounds like a tough row of sh!tcans Slash. Get well soon.

I’m also sending my sympathy to the hospital staff, Nguyen and all the others in your ward. Are they queuing to get out of your ward or to get in? :)

Take care out there!

redsnail 9th July 2002 11:55

I have this strange mental image....

*Slasher trying to beat out the flames with his dick.*

Did your pad catch fire from too much friction?

Uh oh, I can see this thread going to JB.
Please Mr Moderators let it stay here. :)

Bird Strike 9th July 2002 12:46

Slash, if you're reading this, here's "How to beat the nurses objecting to the use of Internet/Puter" (tried, tested and proven, although I haven't tried looking at porn in hospital):

1) Ignore their objection
2) Do it in the middle of the night when they're not about
3) Let them play with it too
4) Get a private room (less contact with the nurses)

I really hope you can get out of hospital soon and get all your naughty links back.

AeroBoero 9th July 2002 15:42

Sorry mate

Slasher;

Sorry to hear about your last weeks. What can I say that haven't already been said here? Well. Life goes on and you seem to be picking up again - is the nurse worth a go:p? Wish you be good soon and out of the hospital.

Truly yours

PilotsPal 9th July 2002 16:12

Knowing Slash's luck, I'm sure his nurses are old, ugly and of a most unpleasant disposition. Can't imagine the hospital would run the risk of a pretty young nurse giving him bed-baths.

Kaptin M 10th July 2002 11:36

Kerrist Slasher, you'd better write a book mate! With all the "events" you've experienced to date you'll be able to retire a wealthy man from the royalties.

And btw, it's not the porn on the puter that's pissing her off, it's the old VC's w@nking http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/mica/face.gif (and your encouragement) !!

Life must've been bloody dull for you in Oz!!

Oh yeah, can't help ya with any of that other stuff.

Great to see you back (and lucky to still have you, by the sound of things.)

Eric 10th July 2002 23:45

Great to see you back Slasher...we missed you.

777AV8R 12th July 2002 02:41

AG Alternatives

'Tis true..Kazaa is loaded with spyware and there were some other embedded programs that made this a rather poor product. Alas..a programmer who knew of the pitfalls, came along and rewrote the program..and it works like a charm...with NO SPYWARE..but uses the Kazaa network...

Try: http://www.kazaalite.com/

This program works and does NOT have any of the bad stuff in it.

For those who have had previous P to P software downloaded..it would be a VERY good idea to download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. It is free and it is available at:

www.cnet.com

When you download the Kazaalite...there WILL be a small cookie installed on the system...it is completely harmless and if you are using Adaware...you must make Adaware ignore this cookie. The cookie mimics the harmful junk that the original Kazaa program is loaded with...the big difference...it is completely harmless and has absolutely no affect on the running of the program.

My offspring have downloaded hours of goodies using the system and there have been no problems whatsoever!

Enjoy

Engineer 12th July 2002 08:16

Agree with 777AV8R but would also suggest looking at

Supertrick

this causes all the little feckers that you don't want, to load into a local address.

Have fun

Binoculars 12th July 2002 13:16

Thank you 777 and Engineer. Changing to broadband in a couple of weeks and was finding it difficult to learn where to go for the latest site for the mp3's. Seems it is something that has to be checked often to keep ahead of the spyware nasties and the copyright fraternity who continue to fight their hugely expensive legal battles.

Good to see that for once the lawyers are fighting a losing battle, not that they care of course, closing down one site then starting a new legal battle at ridiculous fees to close down the next one. Keep it up boys.

:p

Skypig 14th July 2002 14:41

Slasher, Maaaaaate...........

Sounds like you have had a crap time of it :(

Bloody hard to keep ya chin up when it rains downon ya like that, I know!!

Good to see ya back anyhow

solotk 18th July 2002 00:57

Slasher,

Good to see you back mate, and sorry about all the bad karma that happened all at once, hope it all gets better soon.

Story doing the rounds, that a BAe rep has seen a Spit in a packing case north of your location, on an air base. Not sure how true the story is, but a noted Spitfire historian is saying it's kosher:)

I use Kazaa, and I don't suppose now is a good time to mention that I enjoyed ugandan relations with the current ladyboss for 3 years? :D

Best wishes

PongoPrivatePilot

LowNSlow 18th July 2002 05:04

Sorry to read about your recent horrors Slash. As has been said before, good to have you back. :D Hope you get back up to speed soonest.

ExSimGuy 21st July 2002 23:11

Slash,

Sh-one-t. Hope that Q3 2002 is better than Q2 was :)

Give the maid my love (did I phrase that badly? ;) )

Fujiflyer 28th July 2002 13:44

Slasher

I've just read your posting - sorry 'tis wasn't a bit sooner.

I'm really sorry to learn of your problems. :( Least things can (hopefully), only get better...

Do keep "us lot" up to date with how you are. Look forward to better times.

Fujiflyer ;) :)

Slasher 3rd August 2002 09:00

Im an absolute bloodey shipwreck.

Im walking again since the skin on my legs started to heal a month ago. I now have a thing called "psoriasis" brought on by stress, causing big red blotches on my friggin dick (of all the places it HAD to form)! Helper Tcells-related that have apparentley gone apesh!t after they repaired my fried flesh. Hell I thought Id contracted a nastey bloodey STD!

Been recovering in the Caribbean after a stopover in Adelaide to see the fam after mum died. Am back in Nam under medical supervision and a "learn to walk again" program. Starting office work after a 2 1/2 month medical leave so I can still get pay. Wont be flying again for another few months until Im all ok again.

2002 isnt gonna go down as one of my better years. :(

JudyTTexas 3rd August 2002 13:38

SOS So Sorry...Slash

Slash... I just recently learned of your terrible demise. My condolences regarding your loss. :(

I tried to e-mail ya but it came back. Reddo directed me to
this thread.

Again, I'm very sorry this happened to you.

You've got friends...
