sorry, you beat me to it.

Konkordski 23rd May 2002 08:39

If you go here you can find free software such as Popup Killer. That'll fix 'em. :p

foxmoth 23rd May 2002 08:50

Agree TOTALLY,
incredibly annoying and after the THIRD pop up there is NO WAY I would go near ANY product that is annoying me in this way.

foxmoth 23rd May 2002 08:54

mcdhu - even minimising does not work - they just pop back up, the only thing apart from the suggested pop up killer is to move the box right into the corner of the screen out of the way.

heinzmanm 23rd May 2002 08:57

Just to add to this, I use KillAd which works just fine and takes just seconds to download. Get it from www.download.com

Ba$tard things seem to have stopped, not sure why, but thank Christ for that.

Sad as it may seem, out of idle curiosity I read their usage policy

Quote: "Regrettably, there are occasions when individuals or groups of people exchange messages or involve in online activities, which are considered to be unacceptable by the Internet community. This is described by the generic term of "abuse". Although much unsolicited messages, particularly e-mail (SPAM), may just be a harmless but annoying way of advertising products or services, some can be as distressing as receiving malicious telephone calls. "

they seem to go to great lengths to decry the practices they use!

So here are a couple of ideas.
1) At an allotted time to be agreed as many people as possible should try to access their site thus forcing their server to fail,
2) E-mail them at [email protected]
with your opinions as to the worth and annoyance of their "tacky" advertising
:p

Smokie 23rd May 2002 09:12

Heinzman, thanks, thats seemed to have solved the problem.

Happy Landings .

Smokie.:) :) :)

Avman 23rd May 2002 09:16

Well I'm not getting them! And as for those of you arrogant wan#ers who have nothing better to suggest than it will stop you logging on to PPRuNe, bye-bye and good riddance. I'm sure Danny will look into it when he has the time. Please remember that he manages this site in his free time and for no personal gain.

Evo7 23rd May 2002 09:40

They seem to be all gone now :)

Phoenix_X 23rd May 2002 10:12

A very common problem with people getting popups is that they have commonname installed. This will open popups on any site, and especially now with IE6, had no real advantages. I would suggest anyone having commonname installed (if you're not sure, look in Control panel -> Add/remove programs), to remove it from your system. It'll stop 100s of popups.

FL310 23rd May 2002 10:26

I am sure that there is a misunderstanding somewhere. I never ever saw any pop-up advertisement on PPRuNe.

A pop-up is actually an advertisement or announcement in a new browser window, mostly in a resized and much smaller window, frequently also programmed to stay open as long as the "main" window is visited.

What we have here on PPRuNe are simply advertisement banners, created as still pictures, animated gifs or even as a little Flash movie.

These banners may be as nasty as a new browser window as they can be programmed to contain spyware etc.
As already mentioned here on the thread earlier, there are means to avoid the banners coming up...AdAware and the one mentioned here as well as plenty of others may help. Using these "protective" measurements will on the other hand create error messages in IE as a script error is suspected due to the fact that a component of the webpage is not loaded.

So...if you see a pop-up (and this means a new browser window), it does not come from PPRuNe...

Oh, you didn't - so we're all wrong...? ;)

They were there. They've gone...

FL310:

You write as if we haven't a clue what we are talking about. We are fully aware of what a pop-up is and what a banner is. Did it not cross your mind that PPRuNe this morning has around 40 messages decrying the 'Popups' it could safely be assumed that something out of the ordinary was happening?

The popups have now stopped but this does not mean that they were not there!

airmail 23rd May 2002 11:16

Sorry to report that just before I saw this thread, I had a pop up ad for a credit card company (I think-I closed it down immediately).

Looks like it's not just O2:mad:

PPRuNe Towers 23rd May 2002 11:17

They came, we saw, they were booted:D

Arrived entirely without our permission through a third party agency who do the ads at the bottom of the pages. We do the ones at the top. Delay due to dealing with timezones at the other side of the world.

Pop-ups??? No, I have not gotten any... I believe it could be from other sources rather than from Pprune.

Certainly seems a bit strange.
I haven't (ever) had any pop ups from pprune, and I haven't got commonname installed.
I also haven't got any specific software installed to block them.

Will be interesting to know the reason

Tinstaafl 23rd May 2002 13:44

I've never had any pop ups on PPRuNe.

Quite happy with the banner ads apart from those that have a fast image cycle. The others are relatively unobtrusive but their info. is available when I wish to follow up.

skygazer 23rd May 2002 13:53

Answer was posted on another thread (Get rid of........) today - unauthorised advert apparently. The freeware worked, although slowed things down when I wasn't surfing (but it's easy to disable). Like most computer-related probs, it depends on your individual machine, software set-up, internet connection, etc. etc. etc. ............. Anyway, all seems OK now:D
