Tks for the effort @hris.
How long did it take you to put that list together? Was the TV broken:}? Quiet a few in there that I can use. |
Pretty impressive list there @hris, good job.
I'm a little bit raw - is there any thing in there that would help me to write a pretty basic spreadsheet (log book) type program for the Symbian OS? Cheers. |
Mods, can this be made sticky ? Its great
|
©hris,
Good list. You might also want to check out this earlier thread which has a few choice gems on it (some will, of course, be a little dated, but most, I would think, would not.) /RTFM |
All I can say is: wow! Good work, mate. One of the few threads I've saved.
|
©hris
Really kool - thanks
You've found all the ones I know and zillions more - thanx a trillion for that. |
Here to help!!
As for the log book..... I am working on making a logbook in MS Access. Using a 'switchboard' to make it sort of interactive. I will post it up when I get it completed. I'm not reallly sure of something 'free' that could help you. Sorry. Cheers Chris Edit: PS. Everything can be free if you know the right places to look!!! (Except Airline5, that you have to buy!) ---------- Jet Thrust.com |
I'll second phnuff's suggestion. Could this be made sticky? There are many tools here which could solve several problems people have had. Not to mention pointing people at perfectly good free software that could save them a bundle. Maybe it could be reorganised a little first though, as there are some duplicates in it (I am willing to help with this).
Thanks for putting that together ©hris! goates |
Top list! Great work. Thanks Chris!
I third phnuff - this really deserves to be made sticky. Just add a free OS, Wine and WineX and you have the world at your feet... PS: You missed out MEPIS (and over 300 others) in your Linux distro list - I'll report on it in a week or so. |
Two more free programs.
Winsock Fix: 'specially good for Win2K after an NIC change knackers your connectivity: WinsockFix Also works with Windows XP although it's not needed as often as with the other versions of Windows. And a recent (for me) find that enables you to do a remote shutdown of Windows 2000 that goes all the way, not stopping at the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen: Power Off It really should be a sticky and up there with the travelling thread. |

One I find very useful is the Knoppix Security Tools Distribution. Download and burn the .iso and you get a bootable CD full of useful tools for testing your network security. You may be surprised what services you are offering to the outside world.
...use it responsibly though folks :ok: |

Microsoft Visual C++ Toolkit
http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/ FAQ: What is the Visual C++ Toolkit 2003? The Visual C++ Toolkit is a free edition of Microsoft’s professional Visual C++ optimizing compiler and standard libraries – the same optimizing compiler and standard libraries that ship in Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional! Are there any restrictions on how I use the Visual C++ Toolkit? In general, no. You may use the Toolkit to build C++ -based applications, and you may redistribute those applications. Please read the End User License Agreement (EULA), included with the Toolkit, for complete details. Is there any technical support available for the Visual C++ Toolkit? No. The Visual C++ Toolkit is a free download and is provided without formal technical support. Documentation for the Visual C++ compiler is available online, and it is recommended that further assistance be obtained by posing questions in online programming newsgroups and community forums. What does the Visual C++ Toolkit install on my machine? The Toolkit installs 1) the Visual C++ command-line compiler and linker, and their dependencies. 2) the Visual C++ C Runtime Library and static-link modules, and the Standard C++ Library, including STL 3) the Microsoft .NET Framework Runtime, including library files necessary for building C++ applications that run on the .NET Common Language Runtime, 4) four samples demonstrating key features of the Visual C++ compiler and libraries. |
Just had to throw my two pennorth' in.
Been using Norton Internet Security / NAV for a year or two now and, to cut a long story short, needed to look for a replacement. Installed Zone Alarm, used it many moons ago but it now seems a lot more seamless, you just dont notice its there. On the virus scanner front, I've used AVG before, but was not totally convinced. Co-inciding with the start of this thread, I read a review of AntiVir . A respected PC journalist recommended it so I thought I would give it a try. Most impressed. Lightweight (very), it's updated very regularly and I've tested it on a number of recent viruses (deliberately downloading - am I mad?) and it caught them all instantly and without fuss. The only negative aspect in my opinion is that you have to remember to update it manually, and every update is a full replacement of the virus definition file, a shade short of 2mb, no probs with ADSL, but slightly irritating for dial up connections. Would'nt dream of buying an AV product again whilst this is around. Tim |
I find Agnitum's Outpost personal firewall quite good. The free version can be found here.

super list Chris..what more could a man ask for! hope it's ok to post on another site I use as sure to be of great benefit, once again many thanks.

Adaware se
A new version of Adaware is available. The current version will be phased out in about 90 days.
I have just downloaded it on XP and seems to be working fine. Adaware se |
Adaware SE
Hi Sprocket,
Did you just download over the version already on your PC ? Looking at the new 'face' of the SE, it looks a bit fancy - I like the no nonsense look of the old version. Do you find much difference in the operation? Cheers TG |
G'day TG, first up I downloaded and then installed.
The Install Wizard will give you the option to remove existing Adaware 6 before it installs SE. I used it to remove AAW6 and the install went well. The Lavasoft web site forum has some FAQs if you want to learn more about SE. EDIT: I believe there may be some conflict with the two versions if SE is installed over the top of AAW6. Dont forget to check for updates after installing, there have been a couple since the initial release of SE |
Thanks a lot
G'Day Sprocket,
Thanks a lot for the info. I shall take your good advice, and indeed always check for 'fixes'/updates. Cheers TG |
I've found the new version of Adaware to be far more thorough in both its detection of problems and in the way that it reports them.
It's also much faster. Certainly gives more control over what you delete, whilst providing additional and more detailed information. Overall a great improvement on an already great tool. |
Thanks Guys
Thanks guys.
I must confess, I have not changed over to the new SE yet! I'll get round to it soon. Cheers TG |
Is Adaware SE free then?

Updated version installed
Hi Guys,
I've just installed the latest FREE SE version, and was surprised to find it said I had 107 infiltrations! I binned them all. I tried updating the 'signatures' after it said my list was 6 days old???!!! On instructing it to update, it said no new components to install....... strange. The present definitions [right after installing upgrade] are: SE1R7 06.09.2004 [with the core application 1.04 Personal] I just find strange/odd that such a smashing FREEWARE is telling me my definitions are 6 days out of date, then does not apparently allow the update. Another niggle is this little note from the HELP files: Startup settings are disabled in Ad-Aware SE Personal edition Still it's free, so acceptable. Cheers TG |
Many thanks Richard, the ones I were looking at had 'Purchase' next to them......
|
BRL,
They always make the ones you need to purchase easy to find and you practically need to be Sherlock Holmes to find the Freeware on most websites. ;) Take Care, Richard |
Thanks again Richard. I have downloaded the free one and it found 56 things for me to deal with..!!!
Cheers. :) |
|
Bumped,
Can we have the sticky back on this thread please Mods? |
There's a link to it from the FAQ at the top
|
I think I need to rename the FAQ...
|
This thread is so useful to me, especially when I'm choosing new software for the home PC's.
Sadly some of the programs are hard to find - Sygate has been "taken over" so their excellent firewall is hard to find now, DVDdecrypter has been nobbled by legal threats, etc. Perhaps we should try and update Chris's excellent list, to keep it as useful??? Fuji :ok: |
ImgBurn takes over from DVDDecrypter...
ImgBurn takes over from DVDDecrypter...:)
Looks like the same software with a new name but I notice it has been updated to handle later encryption! http://www.imgburn.com/ Cheers! |
Microsoft have bought- out the excellent Giant Antispyware. They are allowing a free download for XP under their new name of Defender. I don't like Microsoft much, but this is a very good anti spyware programme that runs in the background
