Pda/phones
Can anybody give me any information about these new breed of
pda/phones.We tell pax to switch of there mobile phones when boarding the a/c but if they are using the pda side of it onboard does this swich off the phone part? or could they potentially recieve calls? When dealing with pax who have these phones i err on the side of caution and insist it is switched off but some of the pax are fighting back!! what is the answer?

Announce over the PA that only truly sad people use these little toys.
Once upon a time, PDA meant 'Public displays of affection' and this was frowned on by many. But telling someone to "Turn off their PDA" could perhaps be construed as interfering with their moral standards....
Basically you need to state that only non-RF devices without lasers may be used in flight - and only when the belt signs are off.

I would carry on as before and ask these sad cases to switch off.
There is a apparently a phone model Sanyo 4900 which has an 'Airplane Mode' and I would imagine more to follow but until they (users who can't live without for ten minutes) have tested on a 757 or similar full of their 'friends' then better safe than sorry.

I've just got an orange SPV mobile, and you can select what they call 'radio off' which switches the phone side of it off.
But to be honest, apart from the mp3 type side of it, and a funky tennis game, which gets pretty boring after a while, i cant see why you'd want to have it on if the phone bit is switched off.
But to answer the question, it is possible to turn them off!!
