Mac System OSX and OSX.1
I presently use System OS9.1 on my Imac. About a couple of years ago, I purchased an OSX disk to upgrade. However due to much adverse criticism of the OSX system at the time, I didn’t install it. I thereafter purchased the OSX.1disk, having heard that this cured a lot of the instability problems associated with OSX, but I haven’t got round to installing it.
Can anyone give me their experiences with either the X or X.1systems, to relieve my mind, before I install the upgrade? (I understand that there is now OSX.2, but I haven't purchased a disk for that yet- I hope that X.1 will have cured most of the problems?)

OS X (Cheetah) had numerous problems as Apple were forced to release it when Steve Jobs said it would be, rather that when it was ready.
I found 10.1 not worth bothering with.
10.2 (Jaguar) is a significant improvement.
However 10.3 (Panther) is due out soon and as Apple charges for each new OS you might wish to wait until this release.
I run 10.2 with the 10.2.4 update on one drive and 9.2.2 on another as some pro publishing/design software does not care for OS10.
Overall OS10 is very good but requires some adjustment of approach if you have been with Macs. since OS 6 as many of the bits I want to tweak are now in strange places or are un-tweakable.

Running 10.2.5 here on the machines at the Towers - Danny, me and Sick Squid are all Mac types.
Rock stable OS - never switched off (portable included) other than restarts after upgrades. However, as 10.3 will be a paid upgrade I'd follow the suggestion to wait.
Very happy to report that PPRuNe now renders correctly with the latest build of the Safari browser. Very impressed with what they've done with it so far

I run Jaguar, 10.2 its really nice, no real problems with it, but I wouldn't go for anything less.
On a very important note, don't switch unless you have 256 MB RAM or less than a 100Mhz System Bus, otherwise it will be slow, make sure you have got lots of disk space, OSX takes up a lot of space.

I concur. If you can wait until OSX v10.3.x then wait. I have been using Macs since the very first one became available in 1985. I still have the 128k Mac.
I waited for a long time before I upgraded to OSX on an older G4. It was v 10.0 and I had to revert back to OS v9 as it was so unstable and there was only limited support at the time. I went permenantly to OSX v10.1.5 when I got one of the newer Mac G4s and have never looked back. Recently upgraded to OSX v10.2.4 and it was worth it.
It is a lifestyle change though going from OS9 to OSX. At first you may find it uncomfortable but one you get used to it and start using the newer applications written specifically for it you won't look back. It's a powerful OS which sits on top of the very reliable Unix unlike Windoze which still sits on top of DrOSS!
