STRANGE situation....Windows Explorer closes

Windows Explorer opens OK, and expands fine when clicking on the "+" sign, but when clicking on the folders to expand them or clicking directly on any file simply closes the entire Windows Explorer!

NO corrupt files, and no disk errors. Reformatting is not an option.

Internet Explorer (which is Windows Explorer in the background, really) works fine and in fact when any local drive info is entered on the address bar it displays fine, and I can click on the folders, etc. Go figure.

I cannot find ANY help for this anywhere. Only one reference to this was at www.annoyances.org but that person never found a solution. MS Knowledge Database has nothing I can find on this, and a MS Tech we know scratched his head over this too.

Anyone, please? This is driving me and Mrs. Over nuts!

Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1....etc. It's the latest.

OS: Windows XP with all patches and updates.

This occurs with firewall running, disabled and "allow all" selected.

Note this was a problem with WINDOWS Explorer...nothing to do with browsing.

Anyone...? (still have this pesky issue)
