Garmin Drive satnav change of continent maps

Hello,
I have a Garmin Drive satnav with lifetime free map updates previously used in the US/Canada. Does anyone have experience of loading UK/EU maps onto one of these units? Our other Garmin motoring unit was bought in the UK and has been updated for free as and when without difficulty. I don't know what controls which map updates you can get when any device is connected.
Anyone, please.

A quick flip through the manual & Garmin website suggests that you have to pay for a particular region, I guess subsequent updates are free. £79.99 for Europe & associated areas.

There are loads of free Garmin map updates sites - I have used these before for on old Nuvi 200 and have had no problems. Just Google 'garmin free maps update download'

On reflection I decided it was time to upgrade to a unit that still gets the traffic info, the other Garmin products we have no longer get traffic info since Traffic Master stopped providing it. Ebay came to the rescue for less than the cost of EU/UK maps for the other unit. Since we got our EV with built in SatNav we have come to rely on it's very effective re-routing to avoid traffic foul ups of all sorts.
