FB / Google cookies asking for passwords and ripple effect problem

I tend to go on line early and check various sites. All was well, initially, until I went onto FB....get a message asking for password confirmation (never had this before) so I decided to wait until later to respond to the option to for a reset and a one off code sent to my email ...having now done so, I'm still waiting.

However, it was what followed that concerns me.

When I went back to various sites, including this one, I was asked to log in and use my password. This happened on at least five sites which I remain logged into.

I declined to accept FB " accept all cookies" as I do with all sites, other than those I have no choice in accepting as they are deemed essential.

But as I say, what concerns me is the apparent "ripple effect" which commenced after FB asked for my password.

Any, non techie speak please, explanations would be appreciated.

An update. The FB issue has been resolved, but, I am still concerned as to why so many, seemingly unconnected, sites, suddenly asked for password confirmations and prevented me from logging in until provided. There was a Windows update later, if this has any relevance ?

My initial reaction is that you've cleared cookies somehow and that's prompted all sites to require you to login rather than anything Facebook related.

Facebook are far reaching, but not all reaching.

Unless you use Facebook identity everywhere.

Thanks for that. I don't use FB for anything other than to read posts / updates from friends .

I didn't click on anything that could have resulted in a cookie clearance. As I said, I was surprised when I got the message on FB and even more surprised when the various sites suddenly all started asking for passwords and to log in. I'm not on any sites which could be called "dubious" in any sense of the word and if I'm doing a search and get a message saying " not secure", then that's it, I go no further. I also got a Windows security update saying "all clear" ,or words to that effect, since the last scan.

I should add, You Tube also deleted all the content displays and I don't subscribe to the site, only watch clips of interest.

That sounds like cookies too. (not an expert, this is an informed guess).

Seems like you may have lost your cookies

I would be tempted to check the file system integrity with chkdsk.

Is this using Google Chrome and do you have a google account of some sort (eg a gmail or youtube account).

If so, it's possible to be using Chrome in either 'logged in' mode or 'not logged in' mode and you'll get a different set of cookies in each case.

Thanks for both replies. I don't use Chrome and I don't have a Google account. I only use the site as a search engine.

As I said, it was the sequence that concerned me. Went on line as usual, went to about 6 sites for a scan read, then to FB. This was slow to load, albeit nothing strange about that, but then came the message asking for my password. I decided not to proceed at the time, but would do so later. It was when I went back to the previous sites I had opened up normally that the "log in / password" messages started to appear.

However, again, as I said, there was a Window's update later on and I'm aware these can cause glitches.

Everything now appears to be working normally, thankfully, but any IT issues concern me because I really don't understand IT other than the very basics.
